Dear John,

This hotel is infested by young Swisses, apparently quite unconnected
with one another, who walk, talk, wag their arms, point
at the scenery with their walking sticks, bow to ladies &
gentlemen at the right hand table, & the left hand table, & the
middle tables & all the other tables in turn, exactly -
exactly - as Beery would do these things. And they are all
just like Beery as a row of pins. Do you know if he went on a
walking tour in Helvetia, or to winter sports there, circa 1900?

One of them has brought his mother along as my yankee
neighbour puts it; so that one has an idea which was Berry's idea
of a paramour. Odds chimney pots & salamander stoves! It is a
very formidable idea. Not a word of this to Susie I am
not one of these who go about to shatter hero-worship!

I don't believe there is a word of truth in that story about
Ramsay MacDonald & Lady Drogheda.

We move in the best & most exclusive set in the Riviera
which consists of our two selves.

Four days a week they serve us with a 'poisson' which they call
'Loup de Mer', as its name implies, it is about three times as
bad as a dog-fish.

Katie has gout in her big toe like the first Lord Chatham,
but behaves better in the fire.
