Hotel du Cap Antibes A/M France

Mardi gras 1924

Dear John,

This hotel is infested by young Swisses, apparently quite unconnected with one another, who walk, talk, wag their arms, point at the scenery with their walking sticks, bow to ladies & gentlemen at the right hand table, & the left hand table, & the middle tables, & all the other tables in turn, exactly - exactly - as Beery wd. do these things. ^(And they are all just as like Beery as a row of pins.) Do you know if he went on a walking tour in Helvetia, or to winter sports there, circa 1900?

One of them has "brought his mother along" - as my Yankee neighbour

puts it; so that one has an idea which was Beery's idea of a paramour. Odd's chimney pots & salamander stoves! it is a very formidable idea. - Not a word of this to Susie. I am not one of those who go about to shatter hero-worship.

I don't believe there is a word of truth in that story about Ramsay Macdonald & Lady Drogheda.

We move in the best & most exclusive Set in the Riviera wh. consists of our two selves.

Four days a week they serve us with a "poisson" wh. they call "Loup de Mer". As its name implies, it is about three times as bad as a dog-fish.

Katie has gout in her big toe, like the first Lord Chatham, but behaves better in the fire.

Love to you both. What remains of us (of me very little, for what with lack of food, & worry about my country, I can put a shooting boot down inside my collar) intends being home before Easter.

I always seem to cash my cheques the day before the franc dives. I have not yet discovered who loses by the franc diving - nor who gains, for the prices all go up. Money is [in margin:] merely an illusion like time & space, & by being stripped of it we approach nearer the Godlike conception of the absolute.

Yours ever
