DELORAINE, NJORO Rongai KENYA COLONY.

Dec. 4th. 1924.

My dear John

May I offer you my sincerest & best congratulations on the tremendous success which your Life of Lord Minto has achieved. I cannot say how delighted I have been to read all the nice things which have been written in the Reviews, & I am so awfully glad for both your & Lady Minto's sakes. When one has a prejudice like I naturally had, one never knows how a book may appeal to others, & it was a great joy to find that the enormous

pleasure which I had enjoyed in reading the book, was shared apparently by every one else who had read it. I do hope you are pleased, & I feel you must be. You seemed to have improved & polished a lot since I read the typed pages last spring, & I particularly enjoyed the Canadian part, whilst the last 2 chapters which I hadn't read before, are quite charming & excellent. Considering you never knew Lord Minto personally, I think it is quite wonderful how you have depicted his character, & it is a living picture. As one who loved Lord Minto, I should like to thank you for having given such a true & charming picture of him to be handed down to posterity.

What a ghastly thing Sir Lee Stack's murder was! I do hope the Govt. will remain firm & clear up the Sudan situation for once & all. Poor Stack may achieve by his death more than he could by his life. We have had our Commission

out here, & though they hadn't sufficient time to do all they should have & were very rushed & tired, I do feel it will bear good fruit. Ormsby Gore was quite excellent & has made a big name for himself out here. Have a talk with him one day if you can. Well must stop now, & wish you every good fortune in 1925, & with best congratulations on Lord Minto's Life.

Yrs ever

Francis Scott.
