I hope that you will not think it impertinent of me if I write to tell you what very great profit and pleasure I have derived from your History of the War, which I have just finished, and which fills me with admiration. It is, indeed, a herculean task, marvellously accomplished. No aspect of importance seems to have escaped you, whilst every phase and subject is treated with masterly clarity, judgment, proportion, impartiality and conciseness -

The difficulty of the task is increased by the fact - that it was written pari passu with the progress of the War.
Your last chapter is a veritable master-piece, and, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest things ever written in the English language.
Sir Frederick Maurice to whom I spoke recently about your History was loud in its praise.
A curious coincidence happened to me the other day which might interest you.
I got into conversation with the conductor of an omnibus, who seemed a very intelligent man and who told me that he had served in the War in the Signals. I advised him to read your book, adding some words of commendation, whereupon a man who was sitting a few places away, turned round and said "I am very glad to hear you say that, Sir, as I was Mr. Buchan's assistant". He was a clean shaved man, but I had no opportunity of further talk with him, as I then had to leave the omnibus.
I have also read several of your stories with the greatest pleasure.
I am emboldened to write to you at this length, as my wife had the pleasure of meeting you at luncheon with Mr. Hunter a few days ago.
