I cannot forebear to write a line to say with what pleasure I have recently read, & reviewed in the D.T., your History of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. So many of these regimental histories are tomes of arid detail, so few either focus events in proportion or give a general historical background to make the story of the regiment alive & intelligible, that your book was a refreshing change, the more so that it was written with your own

inimitable literary skill. It is some years since we were in touch, years obviously full of busy work for you & busy equally for me in the gradual accomplishment of my ambitions, but I could not let such an opportunity pass to recall memories of your kindly help in the past as well as my appreciation of your latest military work. As you see by the address I am enjoying a holiday, much needed for my first three months after succeeding Repington were exceptionally heavy, but I return to London in a week or two & if you are ever in London should be delighted if you would lunch with me one day.
