8, GOWER STREET, BLOOMSBURY.

Sunday night

[JAS: CANADA 1925-6 suggest March 1926? (before April 9 1926 letter)]

Susie darling

Your telephone has distracted me! Sally & I have tried repeatedly this afternoon & evening to get your number. The answer is always the same - no reply. I do hope you will complain to your local manager for it's really most trying not to get in touch with you today. I have to go off to Nottingham at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning for a meeting of Visiting Justices at the Prison & then on to Chesterfield for two nights. I have meetings & shall be out latish tomorrow (Monday) but I shall be in by 10.30 p.m. if you would ring me up

at the settlement Chesterfield 690. I feel it's hopeless to try & get on to you but you may be able to get through to me. The nuisance is that we ought to have met before Easter to discuss this situation, I quite understand your position. In John's place I would'nt raise one finger to canvass such a job for myself. I think your attitude absolutely right & correct & commend it entirely. But that does'nt end the matter so far as I am concerned. I am the postbox which has to get this communication through to the Government.

Why the telephone breakdown is

particularly trying is that I wanted to tell you what I conceive to be my duty to Mackenzie King in this matter. I propose to go & see Leo Amery & tell him of the unofficial intimation I have had as to who would be acceptable to the Canadian Government as G.G. And I propose to send a letter on the same lines to the Duke of Devonshire.

If we could have talked, these letters would have gone tonight, but naturally I want to consult you & John before moving at all in the matter. I should make it absolutely

clear that you refuse to stir or raise a finger in the matter. But I acting as a sort of unofficial agent for Mackenzie King must get his wishes through.

Could you & John lunch here on Wednesday? If so I will return by the early train. Let me know this to Chesterfield.

We got home at midnight last night. The Riviera has sunshine: otherwise is crowded out by the most stupid vulgar crowd it has ever been my lot to find myself among!

Your loving

Violet
