My dear John
I write to report progress. I saw Leo Amery at the House - for a very few minutes. I purposely cut our interview short for I thought any discussion would be embarrassing for us all & not the function of a post box! He was very nice, thanked me for coming, & said he would let Baldwin know at once. I could see he was entirely taken by surprise at the suggestion. Clearly it had not reached him from any other quarter. I spoke of your most dignified & correct attitude to which

he replied this was certainly so for he had often seen you & you had given no hint.
The Duke was in Ireland & his reply has just reached me. He thinks the suggestion a very good one & has obviously sent on my letter (which was written to that end) to Baldwin.
I shall be curious to hear to what developments all this may lead. I see Cavan's name much to the fore for the appointment. I am here till Thursday next week. Bless you both
Yrs ever
