My dear John
What wonderful news! and how delightful of you to write & tell me yourself. It seems to me that the honour & interest of the appointment is doubled by the fact that you have been asked for by your future subjects & I congratulate them on having got what they wanted. It is not common to find a man prominent as you are both in literature

& politics. It seems to me that in Canada there is a specially interesting role for a man like you (& Susie can share it) of helping to keep Canada British, & fighting the magnetism of that dreadful big mongrel at her gates. As to the H. of Lords I am delighted at their getting so good a recruit. Some day I hope you will have time to realise how many interesting & valuable men there are in that assembly, of whom the world in general knows too little. They are too much undervalued nowadays & as a body it handicaps them. Once more hearty congrats; best love to Susie & you Alas! for the separations involved, but the price must be paid.
