My dear John,

I must add my voice to the chorus of congratulation, for I am very proud that so old a friend, and so dear a friend, has been chosen for one of the Empire's greatest honours. This is a great & filling culumination to your long career of public service. You will discharge the responsible duties of the Governor-Generalship to admiration, but, what is more, you will enjoy them.

How are we to get on without you for five years? That is what is puzzling me. We shall just have to make shift with the lesser men you leave behind!

I do hope it will be our luck to find ourselves in Canada during your reign. I should love

to make a ton with you at leisure to some of those lovely bits of Canada of which we got only passing glimpses. I'm glad you're going to a Dominion which we know so well for we can picture your life there with some real appreciation.

In all our good wishes & blessings, Susie is of course included. How lucky you are to have her with you! To triumphe!
