My dear John,
I must add my voice to the chorus
of congratulation, for I am very proud that so old a
friend, and so dear a friend, has been chosen for one
of the Empire's greatest honours. This is a great &
filling culumination to your long career of public service.
You will discharge the responsible duties of the
Governor-Generalship to admiration, but, what is more,
you will enjoy them.
How are we to get on without you for five
years? That is what is puzzling me. We shall just
have to make shift with the lesser men you leave
behind!
I do hope it will be our luck to find
ourselves in Canada during your reign. I should love
