Cressoney Saint Jean Cresmatten (Aosta)
3. July. 1935
Dear Lord Tweedsmuir,
Your very kind letter and aknowledgement seems to authorise a reply - though it might appear superfluous to you. I wish I was younger, and able to avail myself of the opportunity you offer to visit the Canadian Rockies under your auspices - it would be grand! but alas! it cannot be - I've grown old and heavy (though not fat!) and whatever adventurous spirit I had, seems to be all evaporated.
And you are starting now on the biggest adventure of your life! So you will understand my respect and admiration.
I send you this picture of our valley

at the foot of Monte Rosa, where we have a little Alpine Chalet. We've only just arrived, escaping from the stiffling heat of the plains.
I renew my warmest good wishes to you - and hope that your tremendous responsibilities may not weigh too heavily on you. In any case they cannot fail to be intensely interesting and absorbing.
I pray that some day I may see you again, and am, as ever,
Yours very sincerely
