[Heading] Saluda Lake Ski School Opens 10th Season.

Jimmy and Margaret Durham

Jimmy Durham and his wife, Margaret, are directors of Jimmy Durham's Water Ski School Inc. at Saluda Lake in Berea. This will be the 10th season of operation for the ski school and each season has proven more successful than the one before.

The ski school was contracted by Seneca, S. C. for a Water Ski Exhibition to climax the TriCentennial Celebration this past year. This year there are water ski exhibitions scheduled for Greenwood, Laurens and Greenville, S. C. Also other exhibitions are on the calendar but are still unannounced.

Not only are Jimmy and Margaret pro water skiers but also are the residing ice skating pros at Beech, Mountain, the famous winter ski resort at Banner Elk, N. C. The past two winters have taken them to Boone, N. C., Charlotte, Atlanta, and San Juan, Puerto Rico to do ice skating exhibitions. This past November the Durhams went to Paris, France and skated in the Champselysse Ice Area for exhibitions.

Jimmy, Margaret, Dianne Wyatt (Jimmy's water ski partner) and Dennis "Dink" Wyatt, Dianne's husband, will be traveling to Marbaria, Spain, this September, and will continue to East Africa. After the Spain trip they will return merely to pack up again for a trip to Honolulu, Hawaii. Later the group will again finish out the winter at Beech Mountain.

The Durham's were featured this winter on Channel 4 with Bill Wheless on "Today in the Piedmont", and again with Jayne Adair on "Update" to discuss the life of a water skier and ice skater. WFBC-TV will be doing a special feature to be broadcast in the near future. The Durhams, along with Dianne Wyatt, have also been recently doing television commercials for companies in the South. They have incorporated their winter and summer sports activities into some very prolific T.V. commercials for many companies.

Tami, Jimmy and Margaret's only child, was recognized by United Press International as being the youngest female water skier in the world. Tami skiied at the age of 29 months unassisted, 75 feet behind a tow boat. Jimmy had worked with Tami one month prior to this on the beach, teaching her the basic fundamentals of skiing. Not only are Jimmy and Margaret very proud of Tami for being the youngest female water skier, but Tami, at the age of four years old was able to ski on one ski and jump a ski jump specially designed for her by her father.

"The qualifications for being a good water skier," according to Jimmy, "are being willing to work and the desire to accomplish the event, whether it be the beginner who has never skied to the advanced skier ready for tournament competition." Numerous types of things are taught at the school, including acrobatics on the trampoline. Jimmy said, "Training on the trampoline before water skiing gives one a better feeling of balance." Barefoot skiing, trick skiing, ramp jump0ing, learning the basic fundamentals of a solem course, parachute flying, kite flying and pair double skiing are taught to the more advanced skier.

Pair double skiing is a very new event in water skiing, where the male is simply the "muslce man", statuing the female partner in different balletic positions while water skiing. Jimmy and Dianne Wyatt, his ski partner, were recently recognized by the American Water Ski Association as being the first water ski performers in the world to complete four major overhead movements. Assuming different balletic positions, Dianne is solely supported by Jimmy's right hand, as she is totally suspended above his head.

Jimmy and Dianne were recently featured on the front cover of "The Water Skier" an internationally famous magazine among skiiers.

Official of Greenville County School District have announced that all student report cards will be mailed to parents this year.

Teachers have been asked to request that their students provide self addressed, stamped envelopes for this purpose in advance. Reports will be mailed June 7.

The parents of students who fail to bring envelopes may pick up the report cards from schools either June 7, or the following week.

Dr Harold Patterson, associate superintendent for program direction, explained that buses have in the past run solely for children to receive report cards.

"We are now, in effect, saving the 13,000 miles that our buses must run on any given school day," he declared.

PTA's in the northwest attendance area of the Greenville County School District fared well at the recent state convention in Charleston, according to Mr. Charles Saylors of Berea.

Saylors is president of the Northwest Area PTA Council, and also serves as president of the PTA at Berea Middle School.

"I am happy to report that Rev. W. T. Cooke was elected treasurer of the statewide PTA organization," Saylors said.

Rev. Cooke, pastor of Salem United Methodist Church on White Horse Road, is a former president of District One PTA, which includes all the PTAs in Greenville County. He has also served as president of the Northwest Area PTA Council.

The new state treasurer is oor has been active in PTAs at Bakers Chapel, Wlecome and West Gantt Elementary Schools, Tanglewood Middle and Carolina High School. +++ [Bold] Gold Leaf Winners

"Eight of the ten PTAs from Greenville County that received Gold Leaf certificates are located in the Northwest Area," Saylors pointed out. A Gold Leaf is the highest award of excellence that the state organization presents to an individual PTA.

Armstrong, Arrington, Berea, Duncan Chapel and Wesstcliffe Elementary Schools, and Berea, Lakeview and Northwest Middle Schools each received a Gold Leaf certificate. All eight of these schools are located in the school district's northwest attendance area. +++ [Bold] Increased Membership

At the convention, Saylors accepted a $100 prize on behalf of the Berea Middle School PTA. The award was for the highest numerical gain in membership over the previous year.

"I'm proud to say that the PTA at Berea Middle is the largest in the state this year," Saylors said. "We have 1.164 members, compared with 734 members in the second largest PTA."

Two other PTA's in the Northwest Area, Hollis Middle and Northwest Middle, were recognized for having at least a 100 percent increase in membership. Monaview's PTA grew by 150 percent and Hollis by 111 percent.

Saylors pointed out that Northwest Middle School's PTA achieved 100 percent membership in its first year of existence.

Seven other schools in Northwest Area had membership increases of at least 20 percent; Armstrong, Berea, Sans Souci and Westcliffe Elementary Schools; Berea Middle; and Berea and Parker High Schools.

Both Duncan Chapel and Arrington Elementary Schools were honored for having had 100 percent membership for a number of years. Duncan Chapel received a 15th year ribbon, and Arrington received a ribbon representing 13 consecutive years.

Berea Middle and Westcliffe Elementary PTAs were each recognized for having had two consecutive years of 100 percent membership.

Greenville County as a whole won two first place Membership Awards, he added, one for the greatest numerical gain over the previous year and one for the greatest percentage gain during the same period.

Saylors said the Greenville County has 20,k096 PTA members, compared to the statewide total of 86.488.

Mrs. Joan Purvine of Piedmont is president of District One PTA which includes all the PTAs in Greenville County.

[Heading] Beattie Huff Seeks 8th Term

Beattie E. Huff today announced his candidacy for reelection to the South Carolina House of Representatives from the 19th District of Greenville County.

Huff, a Democrat, is completing his 14th year in the House where he is a veteran member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee which has a strong voice in spending state funds.

A real estate developer for 25 years, Huff resides in the Berea area. he seeks the Democratic nomination in a new singlemember district which includes Berea, Furman University, Sans Souci, Poe Mill and Monaview areas.

In announcing his candidacy, Huff issued the following statement:

"Looking back at the first time I ran for the Housse 14 years ago, I remember my only promise to the people of Greenville County was to serve them in an honest and fair manner, and that I had no other motive or aspiration than to be a man of integrity.

"Even though some leaders have lost public trust and confidence today, I still have the same desire and goal that I began with, plys years of experience to represent my district in the House of Representatives to the best of my ability.

"I can say without fear of contradiction that my vote has always been cast in keeping with my conscience and judgement of what is right for my constituents. The only special interests I have ever represented or ever will represent are those of the hardworking, taxpaying citizens of my district. I have consistently supported efforts to improve education, to keep our environment clean and to push our county and state forward within our means.

"As the only member of the Greenville House delegation serving on the Ways and Means Committee, coupled with my seniority ranking me eighth in seniority in the House of Representatives and second in seniority in Greenville County, I have a place of positive leadership which I feel gives effective representation to the people of my district.

"Service on the Ways and Means Committee for six years has not only given me a great deal of personal satisfaction, but an insight into state government not readily available to the average legislator. Knowing that South Carolina still holds a triple A bond rating in the money markets and that we are growing at above the national average in industrial development, educational achievement and other important areas necessary to a health state economy

makes me even more dedicated to improving my county and state.

"The majority of our problems - and we still have some - require money to solve, and one must have knowledge of the state's overall financial picture in order to make just and reasonable decisions. Requests to spend tax dollars in one area must be and should be balanced with almost equal and justifiable requests to spend it in other areas. Being able to discern and do what's fair to all has always been and will continue to be my sincere aim. Our state has many needs but I believe as an experienced businessman and legislator that our first responsibility must continue to be to keep the state economically sound while continuing our growth and strides toward excellence.

I believe strongly in South Carolina and in our people. If I am reelected I will use my seniority and experience to the best of my ability to benefit the people who send me to Columbia - my friends and neighbors of the 19th District." -----------------------------------------------
