36 Scholarships Awarded In Area

Berea, Carolina and Parker
High School graduates are
receiving a total of 36 J. E.
Sirrine Scholarships this year,
according to Dr. J. Floyd Hall,
superintendent of the Greenville
County School District.

These students were among the
195 recipients announced at the
May 14 meeting of the school
district's Board of Trustees.
Total value of these 195
scholarships is $149,615.

An additional $71,555 is being
awarded to 79 of last year's J.E.
Sirrine Scholars, bringing the
total awards this year to $221,170.

Now in its second year of
operations, the scholarship
program is administered by the
Greenville County School District
especially for graduates of
Greenville County's 15 public
high schools.

Berea High School students
receiving the scholarships in-
clude Edward A. Boehmke, Judy
E. Brockman, Jack W. Creasy,
Larry J. Hill and Kenneth P.
Kearney.

Also, Rita G. Medlock, Cheryl
L. Rives, James E. Tollison, Jr.,
Beverly Williams and Sybil
Williams.

Carolina High's recipients
include Joseph B. Beeks, Patricia
A. Brock, Dale Buchanan,
Cynthia B. Cooke, Pennie L.
Davidson, William Golden and
Sonya D. Gordon.

Also Timothy W. Huff, Steven
T. Johnson, Terry C. Mahon,
Debbie J. Mullinax, Sharon I.
Petty, Thomas E. Pitts, James
Rochester and April D. Shumate.

Sirrine scholars from Parker
High are Glen R. Carson, James
G. Edwards, Bridgette L. Graley,
Nalini L. Kotecha, and David H.
Leopard.

Also Yvonne D. Mason,
Frances P. Mullen, Terry E.
Raines, Dan A. Ray, Jr., Denise
L. Shead and Charlie Thompson,
Jr.

Mr. Charles McLawhorn,
former assistant principal (1968-
71) and math teacher (1967-68) at
Berea High School, serves as
executive secretary of the J. E.
Sirrine Scholarship Program.

Mr. and Mrs. Furman H. Bishop of 307 Hunts Bridge Road
announce the engagement of their daughter, Martha Ann to Robert
R. Dempsey, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. Dempsey of 119
Lawrence Street, Lyman. The wedding is planned July 20 at
Monaghan Baptist Church at 7:30 p.m. Martha is a senior at
Furman University majoring in elementary education. Bob is a
senior at Limestone College majoring in biology and is employed
by Deering Milliken, Inc. in Spartanburg.

LOWE—GOULD

Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Thomas Lowe Jr. of 14 N. Harbor Drive
announce the engagement of their daughter, Sherry Ann, to George
Richard Gould, son of Mrs. Delmar Leland Jones of 23 Konnarock
Circle and the late Rev. George Ernest Gould. The wedding is
planned June 22 at the Berea First Baptist Church. Sherry is a 1972
graduate of Berea High School and now a secretary in the executive
offices of Dan River. Rick, a 1973 graduate of the University of
South Carolina, is employed with Union Carbide. Sherry was guest
of honor Tuesday, May 14, at a drop-in at the First Assembly of God
fellowship center in San Souci. Hosting the occasion were friends of
the groom, Mrs. DeRoy Owings and Mrs. Debbie Crawl. May 24
Sherry was honored with a second drop-in at Berea Fidelity
Federal hosted by Miss Diane Smith and Miss Ann Linder.
