106 Ordinances of the City of Greenville.

SEC. 2. Whenever the Council may order public improve-
ments made at the expense of the property benefited
thereby, it shall be the duty of City Engineer to prepare
assessment roll showing the cost to each in proportion
to the frontage owned or benefits received, when so re-
quested by the Mayor, Council or Committee in charge
of said improvements. It shall be the duty of the City
Engineer when so directed b the Mayor; council or
Chairman of Street Committee, to prescribe and fix the
gradesof any pavement, sidewalk, street, avenue or al-
ley in the city and prepare profiles fo same. To see that
all improvements of sidewalks, streets, avenues and al-
leys when authroized are made in conformity with the
line grade and plan adopted for same. To inspect all
material furnished or work done by any contractor for
the City. To estimate and measure all work done for or
by the City, or material furnished for any improvements
undertaken by the City, and report such estimate or
measurement to the City Council, or to the proper com-
mittee, when so requested. He shall be the Official En-
gineer of the several boards, offices and committees of
the City, and shall perform any and all services appro-
priate to his office that may be required of him by City
Council.

SEC. 3. He shall keep in his office a book in which to enter
all complaints, either by citizens, himslef or the Chief of
Police, pertaining to defective streets or sidewalks. He
shall also keep a book open to public inspection in which
shall be entered all requests for street levels and grades,
front lines for building lots, and for permits for con-
necting with the public sewers, and shall report to the
proper committee from time to time as to what progress
has been made in complying with said requrest and com-
plaints, and he shall daily enter on this book at what
time his services may be had as requested.

SEC. 4. The City Engineer shall, when called upon by any
citizen, survey and establish the line of any lot or par-
cel of land within the City, for which service he shall
