The country above the town of Rockville for a while was quite fertile in appearance but soon the Blue Ridge mountain came into view od the country was generally very rough & hills a few villages were passed nested in between the hills Hagerstown [Junetown?] was passed and after going through several tunnels the train crossed Ferry the Potomac & arrived at the beautiful town of [Harthers?] Ferry which is noted as a place of historical interest I looked out to the window as we passed in [?] of the famous John Brown fort of the U.S. Army but I could not discover anything which I thought had the ap pearance of either of those [?] relies interestingly a pretty place [?] a much large place [?-] [-?] & was certainly a much longer place than I has supposed it was from the [cats?} I had seen of it in [before?] books & photography. About 12 {?} the city of [Bastimeburg?] was reached after passing over a great amount of rough & barren looking country a stop of about twenty minutes was made in front of a large hotel. The sun which had been ap peared undecided whether to shine or to remain hidden & have some bad weather now came out brilliantly & lighted up the many hills and valleys
