NOTES, MISCELLANEOUS: [Page consists of procedure description, including lat./long. of sta 1-6 and depth of sample. Will transcribe as best as I can]

Plankton Survey of Monterey Bay . . . Contract with CoopSardRes.

Procedure at sea:

At six stations: ( 36°37.5'N , 121°53.7'W [sta]1 33 meters depth of cast
36°41.8' , 121°57.3' [sta]2 53
36°46.2' , 122°01' [sta]3 53
36°51.6' , 122°00.1' [sta]4 53
36°56.1' , 121°59.2' [sta]5 18
36°52.2' , 121°55.2 , [sta]6 53

a 200 foot Bathythermograph is lowered to the appropriate depth, a Nansen
bottle is attached to the wire to take a sample[crossed out] water sample at 15 meters;
a surface water sample is dipped directly into the sample bottle; sueface[sp?] temperature
is taken with a bucket thermometer. Two plankton samples are taken: one with a
half-meter net which is lowered verically[sp?] 15 meters and, ten meters of wire are
recovered obliquely, and with the remaining five meters of wire out, the net is
hauled just below the surface of the waterfor[sp]? one minute by a stopwatch; then the
net is recovered. A trucated [sp?] phytoplanton[sp?] net (1/4 meter) is lowered 15 meters vertically
and recovered verically[sp?] as soon as it has sunk to proper depth. The plankton samples
are immediately preserved in formaldehyde for determination of plankters at[crossed out] on shore.
Data is recorded for the completion of Oceanographic Log Sheet -B, using the
code in Hydrographic Office Publication 606-C

Notes are made at each station concerning the the plankters observable along
with the birds and mammals present. Notes are made of any burds [sp?] or mammals noted
particularly Black footed Albatross, whales, porpoise, and pinnipeds, or any unusual surfce[sp?] foms[sp?] between stations.
