NOTES, MISCELLANEOUS: Method used in the qualitative examination of 1/2 meter net hauls, towed for one minute. i.e. Zooplankton sampling.

It is understood that occasional large organisms are not included in the quantitative determination, unless they are at that time an important part of the plankton. For example, three Pleurobrachea bachei would not enter into the quantitative estimate of the sample which had ten ml of copepods.

In the qualitative determinations, large organisms are not included in the same way. Their presence is indicated after the estimate of the rest of the sample has been made.

The volume and not the number of individuals present of a particular group is estimated, except where there are less than five individuals. In this case, the number of individuals of the group is indicated.

The numbers running lengthwise on the graph paper represent the following genera or groups:
[handwritten 1-] 1. Pleurobrachea bachei
[handwritten 4-] 2. Eutonina indicans
[handwritten 10-] 3. Doliolum sp.
[handwritten 8-] 4. Sagius bipunctata
[handwritten 6-] 5. Stephanomia swimming bells or pneumatophores
[handwritten 5-] 6. Hydromedusae
[handwritten 7-] 7. Muggaeia sp. [handwritten Monophyidae]
[handwritten 15-] 8. Mysis larvae
[handwritten 16-] 9. [crossed out Crab] (Petrolistes) larvae
[handwritten 17-] 10. Zoea ([crossed out Emerita] larvae
[handwritten 9] 11. Oikopleura dioecia
[handwritten 14-] 12. Hyperia medusarum
13. Fish eggs are indicated by normal indicated by hyphens.
[handwritten 12-] 14. Calanoids
[handwritten 2-] 15. Beroe cucamaria
[handwritten 3-] 16. Beroe forscalii
[handwritten 11-] 17. Cladocera
[handwritten 8-] 18. Aurelia (or fragments)
[handwritten 9-10-] 19. Chrysaora (in pencil), or Pelagia (in ink)
[handwritten 13-] 20. Copepods, invertebrate eggs, and very small unidentifiable material.

Each genus or group may by this method represent up to 100% of the sample (by the shading in of the entire space allotted to it), or any intermediate amount. If there are more than five individuals of a group they are figured in as a part of the total sample (even if they take up fifty percent or more of the volume).

The dates when the samples are take are indicated on the left margin of the page.

All percentages are visually estimated, and are of value only the show the trends and are to be used in conjunction with the quantitative data.

The volume of each group of genus is indicated by the number of vertical rows shaded in the space allotted it. When the number of individuals is five or less, it is so indicated by a single vertical line being drawn on that vertical central line of the space alloted; each vertical space so occupied representing on individual.
