secured from this Association. Her request for such permission is herewith submitted.

Some time last Fall, I was informed late in the evening of the day on which it was to take place, that there was to be a dance in the Rink. I reported the fact to Mr [Douty] who wrote to Mr Kent, the owner of the Rink, and no dance has been held then since, to my knowledge.

I arranged for a conference with Dr. Jewell concerning the matter and one of the parties interested attended and conversed with him on the subject.

Recently, a meeting has been held by some persons to consider the subject of the "Restrictions" with the avowed purpose of trying to get them done away with or modified. I understand a petition will be presented to your honorable body on this subject. I trust this whole subject will receive your most careful consideration.

A lot has been occupied for several weeks near the bath-house on which curios and [candies?] are offered for sale. It is said Mr David Jacks is the owner of the lot, and from a letter written to Mr Steward, the former Agent of the P.I. Co. in answer to his inquiry, I learn that as said lot and others were reserved by

Mr Jacks when he sold to the P.I. Co. and so were never owned by the P.I. Co. they are not covered by the "Restrictions" imposed by their covenant with this association.

[margin]1891 Houses[/margin] There has been, during the year, some movement in real estate. Quite a number of lots have changed hands and several good houses have been erected.

In order to settle the difficulties concerning streets bordering the Plaza and the Plaza itself, the P.I. Co. assumed ownership and deeded to the city, the Plaza and surrounding streets.

Respectfully submitted T.H. Sinex Sec. P.G. Retreat Association

On motion of M.C. Briggs, F.F. Jewell and Jas. A Clayton were appointed a Committee, in reference to the Rink. The application of Mrs. Brokaw, representing the "Christian Church" for permission to build a Church in Pacific Grove, was read, and on motion of M.C. Briggs, the petition was granted.

On motion the Association proceeded to the election of officers for the ensuing year.

The following Directors were declared duly elected.

of the Leland Stanford Jr University, and a building has been erected.

A similar Institution under the auspices of the State University will also be in operation this summer.

After your last meeting, a strong disposition was manifested to erect a dance & billiard hall, regardless of the "restrictions," but those intrusted in the enterprize concluded to build outside the jurisdiction of your Association, in [New] Monterey.

The Committee appointed by you to respond to the communication presented to your body as its last meeting by Messrs Pell & Heath prepared and published an answer, which is herewith presented.

The Congregational Society has commenced the erection of a church edifice.

The use of the old Parlor has been given for several months to the Congregational Church for regular services, on Sunday afternoons and evenings, also to the Presbyterians for Sunday afternoons services. No arrangements have been made for services at 11 A.M. on SUndays in the Parlor, nor for any services in the Parlor during the season of assemblies. I hope the whole subject of denominational services in the P.I. Co's halls will have your serious consideration.

Respectfully submitted, T.H. Sinex, Secretary

The Committee to confer with Mr David Jacks in reference to uses of property, was on motion continued; as also the committee on Skating Rink.

The following Resolution offered by Dr Heacock and duly seconded was adopted.

"Whereas this Association is under obligation to the P.I. Co. to invite and sustain summer gatherings in the Grove, for which the Co. is at large expense and where it is expected that the M.E. Church will suspend all its regular services during the hours of service at these gatherings, in order to secure the largest attendance upon and encourage the largest degree of success possible to these assemblies, therefore Resolved, that we deem it inexpedient for any of the halls of the P.I. Co. to be used during the season of Summer Assemblies at the hours during which these services are being held."

The following Resolution was also adopted. "The Directors are highly gratified to find the general sentiment of the people, both as private citizens and in public enterprizes, so fully in accord with the purposes and plans of the Association. This is particularly pleasing in view of the great value of a strong public sentiment in favor of order, to maintain the confidence of the people in the continued prosperity of the Grove. The desire to express our thanks to the public for their cordiall cooperation with us, and also highly commend the actions of

I am happy to say that every thing seems to be in a satisfactory condition, with nothing of very special note.

Our town is improving in all essentials such as street work, building, etc.

The Rink has been changed into a Hay & grain store, and this cause of comment and criticism has been removed.

I have no recommendations to place before you.

Respectfully T.H. Sinex Secretary"
