Mrs: Jane L. Stanford: San Francisco Cal.

Dear Madam

No doubt you will be surprised to receive a communication from an Ohio boy, but I am triving to reach the summit as some of our great men of which this state is noted, I am desirous of obtaining an education and my circumstances will not permit of it as my daily earnings are used to secure the necessities of life for those who are depended upon me, my mother and sisters. I will not ask you for a stated amount as I am thankful for small favors and will gladly accept with many thanks in advance any thing you may contribute. No doubt you receive a large number of these same kind of communications and they quickly find their way to the waste basket. Hope this will receive your personal consideration.

I remain very truly yours ? hickenbell
