you that my own heart is as free as ever, that when she was just ready to start for home I gave her back a ring she was so foolish as to give me the night before, nad that when I was accidentally left alone with her with the prospect of a tete. for two hours at least I went with her in search of other company. Are you satisfied your countenance looks rather dubious. You want to know whether she is coming back next term. Well then I cannot tell she did not inctend to four weeks ago, but lately I have heard her say she would. But her old beau has heard of me and I am in hopes her own sense of propriety together with the advice which his fears will suggest will keep her at home.

But be that as it may next term we are almost strangers that I have pretty much determined upon so good by to the subject as I say to her.

How far things at home? You father says have sold your interest in Bulls Head. All your attention then turned toward your clay banks; no hardly I was to fast Miss P. of corse has a good share of them. Give my respects to Mr also to his sister. And the little girl on the hill who captivated me as you said. Well if she did I must be revenged by serving her the same trick or other, when it comes convenient.

but enough I will ask no more questions you know what I should like to hear about. Write soon give me full accounts of all, Yours L. Stanford

Dear Brother

It is with no inconsiderable degree of pleasure that I find myself prepared to write a letter to you. It is so long since I wrote you I feel that if it were delayed much longer there might be room for complaint. It is Saturday to day the day that I generally do up my writing. I have just finished a letter to former students of this place which should have been done some three or four weeks since at least. So that you will perceive that you are not the only one who has had to wait too long for an answer. I am behind one composition a calamity where one had to read his own in the presence of the Gentleman and some 30 or 40 ladies, for we generally like to take some pains in getting them up adn I shall but little time for the ensuing one.

I enjoy myself now pretty well my standing in the school now is about what I wish it to be. The teachers all seem to be pretty friendly and from what I learn speak well of me especially the Preceptress who is my friend.

She told a friend of mine the other day who was to be a member of the school that Mr Stanford occupied a position in the school thta was truly enviable.

Do not think I wish to boast. But when I think of the influence which every one here knows she exerts over the ladies I feel as if I had a powerful Allie and love to tell one of it whom I know like you can and will make no use of it to my injury. Speaking of the ladies reminds me that one has some trouble always to associate with them as little as he should at least I find it so though with some effort I do pretty well.

I had to have some teeth filled yesterday this with some one or two other things which I did not expect uses up about five dollars, an unexpected expense that makes me feel a little sore to day.

But they are holding a protracted meeting here and I think I must go over this evening to see if I can not be made to set a less value upon the words goods and so relieve me of this trouble.

By the way they have made a great effort to convert me this term but I believe they have about given it up as a bad job. Indeed they say that I exert a great influence here to prevent some from going forward, though they acquit me of using my direct influence upon any one by speech. I do not say much upon religion nor do any here know fully what my sentiments are upon the subject though I suppose they are not generally thought to be very favourable to it.

I am anxious to hear from home to know whether the papers have been signed leasing out Bulls Head, also to know what is to be done in the Spring. I wish you would write soon and let me know, if you cannot write immediately send a paper with yes or no on the inside. There are 8 weeks more in this term. I shall need probably about 30 dollars more to carry me home, should I leave at the end of the term. The picture of home begins to come up in my mind pretty often and sometimes makes a pretty long stay.

When is Philip to be married? I have been expecting to hear of the event having taken place this time, I suppose it will come off soon I am sorry that I cannot be present at the ceremony.

Tell him to write soon, and do not forget to do the same yourself. Give my respects to all,

Yours truly Leland Stanford

Dewitt C. Stanford.
