Last Night in Roble
February 7, 1892

Dear Helen:

This is to show how, when
study is not so pressing, the studious
maidens of Roble Hall are sometimes
employed. Last night was Saturday
night. I sat in the parlor with Mable
Packard, Mr. Colgrove ad Mr. Harris.
In another part of the room were the
Misses Evans and Mr. Richardson.
Most of the calling is done on Friday
night but it is more a natural adjust-
ment than intentional. By the parlor
door went flitting, be-wrappered and
excited maidens, sometimes giving
vent to a suppressed gigle and some-
times shaing their fingers at us
girls as much as to say "You are not
in it". But this time the call was
not long as it was the first one of
Mr. C. and so then Mabel and I went
to a certain number on the third floor.
Our names being called through the
key hole admitted us. Ranged round
on the bed, on the floor, tables and
chairs were gay and giddy creatures
eating devilled ham and crackers.
Those on the floor were superintending
the cooking of a mixture of water
cocoa and milk in a tin box over an
alcohol lamp. After while it was poured
into the collection of tooth mugs
and sweetened from the sugar in a tin
can and drunk along with sweet wafers,
while funny stores were told.
