he is making a great mistake, as he discourages everything except work and also he is an extremist in science and regards all else as [bad?]. I mean in the same way as three or four centuries ago, many great thinkers were extremists in philosophy - the metaphysicians who were trying to prove everything by absurd measuring - and before tht the extremists in religious matters. He is a strong evolutionist and won't believe anything but what he can prove by science and get the exact results from. He discourages all society and so there is scarcely any and when a few get together and have a good, informal time all the people are shocked. Next Tuesday we start [our?] [pre?] tournament for the intercollegiate which will be held on March 31st in Oakland. I have twenty-three single and ten double entries so far which I think is doing pretty well. The courts are full now all the time and more and more interest is being taken in the game.
