August [1883]

pretty good today, but heavy
& very dusty.

Thursday 9th

We left at 11 from the "Shackle, came
as far as the Howley (a Public house)
camped about a mile from it. When
we came out of Yam Crk we passed
a large gold field with 50 or 100 chinese
working in small claims. We passed
during the day numerous chinamen
on foot evidently going to the gold field.
The heat was intense & the dust
something frightful. We could not see
a yard in front of us for miles the
dust was so thick. We left
the Howley at about 4 & came through
Bridge Crk a public house & store
comprising the village. The woman in
charge died there this morning, there
were several people there, some making
the coffee. The morning stage was
21 miles, the afternoon 7. It was a good
road so we came very quickly, getting
into camp on Bamboo Crk just before
dark. We left Ah Gow at the Shackle,
we being in a hurry, so wanting as
light a load as possible. We also left
the Giles' tent, it was such a heavy
one, so Mrs. G & I are going to camp together
& the 2 gentlemen outside. We passed
a regular forest of bamboos this afternoon.

Line 36: Number hard to read but I think it is 2, as the party was small - just the Creaghs and the Giles's, Ah Gow and Bouda - see FL19467010/Page 289. Also, the page has been rewritten in ink over pencil; the number 2 is clear in the pencil.
