21st August [1883]

The "Feilung" [Fei Lung] came in before breakfast
this morning. Harry & I went
on board to look at her, & found
that she has only one cabin, but
the Capt offered us his, & the boat
is remarkably clean, so we are
going & Mrs. G. too. We leave here at
½ past 5 tomorrow morning. This
afternoon, Mrs. G. & I returned Mrs.
Solomon's & Foelsche's calls. It has
been a little cooler all day. This
evening we had quite a bevy of farewell
visitors. Mr. Sierey, Mr. Whitelaw,
Mr. Baines, Ward, Bernard,
Stowe & Buckland. I have forgotten
to say that all the servants
are chinese, there is not a woman
in any house in Palmerston. The
town is infested with niggers, having
little or no clothing on. The men
are employed at the stores for odd
jobs.

Wednesday 22nd

We left the residence at ½ past 5,
& came on board by the Customs
boat. We did not leave port
till after 7 so we need not have left our
beds so early. We have been travelling
very slowly owing to a strong head
wind. The Pilot Mr Marsh came
about 60 miles with us.
