Richard Browne, watercolour painter and natural history artist, was transported to New South Wales after being convicted in Dublin in 1810. He served the majority of his seven-year sentence in Newcastle.

Accompanying each illustration is a description of the specimen that includes physical appearance, habitat, methods of reproduction, and native name.

48 BUTTERFLIES

Specimens such as I could collect are here given of the Butterflies of this part of the world which are very Numerous & much varied / these are all procur'd in the Autumn of the year and possess various Beauties. Many nice Critics I have no doubt will dispute the Existence of the most of them and put them down as the visionary subjects of a traveller, who thinks he may smugly laugh at the Credulity of these who have not seen so much of the World as himself, and thus palm on them as living objects the Creation of his own imagination; This remark will hold good for the whole of this work and whomsoever may cast their eye over these pages may Rest Assured that what they have met with are true Copies from Nature and that Originals for them to actually exist in New South Wales.

INSECTS

A few insects are here exhibited, but the quantity I procur'd was very small, of which these are the principal, and are given as possessing the greatest rareity. There are however in this part of the World, a great number, most of which possess some Remarkable and beautiful tints and I shall ever Regret that the part where I was station'd at was so extremely barren of subjects
