Thomas Skottowe was Commandant of the Newcastle penal settlement from 1811 to 1814. While in Newcastle, Skottowe organised the collection and drawing of specimens for this manuscript. He was also responsible for their arrangement and wrote the accompanying text.

Richard Browne, watercolour painter and natural history artist, was transported to New South Wales after being convicted in Dublin in 1810. He served the majority of his seven-year sentence in Newcastle.

Accompanying each illustration is a description of the specimen that includes physical appearance, habitat, methods of reproduction, and native name.

This little Animal possesses all the cunning and activity of the Fox and is a still greater Enemy to the Hen House than the latter, Birds and Eggs alike, become its prey. It burrows in the Ground similar to a Rabbit.

39 FLYING SQUIRREL

This beautiful and Innocent little Animal lives in the large Gum Trees of the Country on the berries of which it feeds. It has a Membranous Skin which extends from the fore to the hind feet and which enables it with the help of its long Bushy Tail to Fly or Leap from Tree to Tree, the before mentioned  Skin acting as Wings: it is very easily Tamed

41 OPUSSUM

These extraordinary Animals live in the hollow parts of the Gum Trees on the Berries of which they feed, by means of their Tails they drop from bough to bough and are enabled by them to leap from Tree to Tree: this faculty in the Tail, has also procurred the addition to their name of Ring Tail.

The female possesses a similar false belly to the Kangaroo their skin is of a fine furry nature
