Belgian hares on exhibition today in a place opposite the Post office, which he has cultivated & raised during last 6 months -- Fine little animals -- most of them from one doe which cost $25 in Los Angeles, served by a $500 buck for $20 -- Very interesting exhibit --

Sunday June 10

Same -- Big thunder shower about noon -- Received through the Carson mint a check for $150 from the US Treasury department -- It read thus: "Treasury Department, Bureau of the Mint, Washington DC June 6, 1900, Alfred Doten Esq, care R K Colcord, Assayer in charge -- US Mint Carson Nevada. Sir I inclose herewith, check No 175952 dated June 6, 1900, issued by Thomas J Hobbs, Disbursing Clerk, Treasury Department on Assistant Treasurer

$150 -- Broke -- Open Air Evening Concert Marlette Lake Trout from Sam

United States at Chicago Illinois in your favor for $150.00 in payment of your account for collecting production statistics of Comstock lode against this bureau -- Please acknowledge receipt -- Respectfully yours -- George E Roberts -- Director of the Mint" -- This very prompt payment was decidedly unexpected and seemingly complimentary, as I was not looking for it for 3 or 4 weeks yet -- Bed at 2 -- financially broke, other than the $150.00 check aforesaid -- The check itself simply read "No 175,952 -- Assistant Treasurer of the U.S. Chicago, Ill. Pay to the order of Alfred Doten, one hundred and fifty dollars Thomas J Hobbs, disbursing clerk" --

The Carson brass Band gave its first open air evening concert last evening from their stand in Capitol Park -- Big audience -- of course -- Reed returned from a fishing trip to Marlette Lake this evening -- met my boy Sam, and Geo James there enjoying themselves -- Sam sent about a dozen nice trout by him to me -- I took them at once to Andy Robert for his wife to take care of, & give some to Harry Day & I

Treasury Check -- Toad MSS returned Photo of Va City -- Richard Miner -- Thunder Rains Rainy Season -- Comstock Photos Commerical College Closing

Monday June 11

Warm & pleasant -- PM cloudy -- Some thunder -- no rain here but heavy showers elsewhere around -- Got my check cashed & deposited $80 -- Jerry Bray brought me from Va a photo of Virginia City, taken from the north end -- cost 25 cts -- Recd return M.S.S. of my toad story fro Black Cat Co -- PM was considerably with Richard Miner an attorney from Bodie who is here on legal business -- knows Virden he does -- Bed 1 --

Tuesday June 12

Same -- Big thunder shower about noon for half an hour or so -- wetted streets muddily -- Big rains to be noticed all around and in all directions -- Bed 12

Wednesday June 13

Stormy -- Cloudy all day with heavy rains about noon -- here and everywhere -- Got all required photos of Comstock business today through Jerry

To Marlette Lake -- That Republican Gavel -- 1900

Marlette Lake this morning for a 2 days outing and fishing -- They will find Sam -- also a good rain ducking this day -- Received by mail this day a copy of the Wyandot County Republican Upper Sandusky, Ohio, an old weekly paper -- pencilled on margin compliments of B F Smith, Stewart, Ohio. Contains three columns descriptive of the wonderful gavel he has made to be used at the Republican national convention in Philadelphia June 19 -- describing the pieces of historic wood product it is composed, from every State and Territory in the Union, complimenting me by spelling my name wrong "Elk Doten, Carson City, Nevada" -- Illustrated by a cut of the gavel and portrait of B F Smith (See Pages 32 et al)

Variable, cool & fine -- PM I wrote nice 1 page letter to Hon George E Roberts, Director of the Mint, Washington DC acknowledging receipt of the $150.00 -- Sent inclosed a piece of the compressed wood -- also sent pictures of Virginia City, the Nevada mill, Kinkead mill, and entrance

Friday June 15

Same -- cooler -- 66º -- PM sent 2 page letter to wife -- Sherif Kinney, Bill Woodburn and Andy Robert returned from Marlette Lake about 2PM -- had a good time, rather chilly & brought good lot of fish -- trout all -- They didn't find Sam, but Tom Tucker and Ed Dupuis who I met today did find him -- He went to Reno last Tuesday but would return directly -- About 5 PM a light fine snowstorm prevailed for a few minutes [illegible] from clouds toward the Summit of the Sierra -- Whitened some of the hill tops & ravines -- Bed 11 -- clear & cold -- Lily Lale Schneider of Carson, daughter

Lily Schneider comes Home to Die Apparently Paid borrowed money -- Trout dinner How Higgin was killed -- McGurn's Bankruptcy

of my old friend the Carson baker returned from a 2 years absence in Europe and New York this morning -- She married Mr Greaves, a newspaper man a year ago -- He was taken down with typhoid fever -- She nursed him faithfully for 7 months, wrecking herself and inheriting the same disease, as she had to leave him and come home to parents and Nevada for her health -- completely broken down -- 20 yrs older -- great brown circles around her eyes -- reduced to a skeleton -- Take some time to build her up, if ever -- never saw such a change in young woman -- Was my chief assistant as Engrossing

Clear, cool & pleasant -- Evening 2nd open air band concert -- well attended -- whole town -- Paid Colcord $10 that I received, $2.50 from away back -- Andy Robert gave me a nice Marlette trout for my dinner -- Bed 11 --

84 -- Bunker Hill -- Big Base Ball Game at Virginia Carson Win -- Hot! 92º -- That Big Gavel! Rep National Convention -- Our Big Gavel!

Sunday June 17

Clear & pleasant -- Big base ball game at Va between Carson and Va clubs -- many people went up there by private conveyance, and by morning train -- the railroad fare being only $1 for the round trip -- Carson's won by a score of 12 to 5 -- Lively time -- Anniversary of Battle of Bunker Hill -- no observance -- no flags -- Bed 11 --

Monday June 18

Clear, fine & warmer -- 82º -- Bed 12 --

Tuesday June 19

Same -- 92º --the Republican National Convention commenced at noon today in Philadelphia -- Preliminary arrangements, starting in, skirmishing, etc -- Big occasion -- Telegrams speak of the aforesaid gavel as the "big" gavel, and the "ungainly" gavel, that was brought down with a tremendous whack" (See Page 82) -- Bed 12 –
