slow and rheumatic and I didn't kill him as I did the first fly a year ago in my French Lodgings -- He was a big old blue bottle fly like the other. Don't know where he crawled to -- wasn't in sight when I came home this PM.

Sunday Feb 10

Same -- Principally clear, but very cold sunshine and freezing in the shade -- Wrote 4 page letter to SL Tribune and 3 page to the Gardnerville Record, both to be sent tomorrow -- Evening about town -- Very cold -- Bed at 1 -- Arlington thermometer said 4° above zero -- Charley Friend the State weather observer says 8° below zero at 7 o'clock this morning, but I think he will show up about 10° below in the morning --

Monday Feb 11

Clear & very pleasant, but freezing all day in the shade -- Charley Friend the State Weather Observer says his official thermometer stood at 10° below zero at 7 AM and Saturday early morning at 8° below -- coldest for years -- Legislature convened at 11 AM -- held PM sessions and adjourned till Wednesday because tomorrow will be "Lincoln Day" -- birthday -- I reported as usual -- Sent 3 page letter to Gardnerville Record and 4 page to SL Tribune, both written yesterday -- also wrote & sent 3

page letter to wife and 1 page to Judge Wm Webster of the Journal -- Rec'd letter from Wife with $5 -- Papers and press telegrams from the East tell much about a Mrs Carrie Nation, an anti whiskey enthusiast, engaged in wrecking drinking saloons in Topeka & other Kansas towns, where the prohibition laws are not enforced. She goes in with a hatchet and slashes, smashes and wrecks things, assisted by other kindred spirited women -- Creates much excitement, but nobody killed as yet -- Says strong drink killed her first husband and now she is on a killing crusade to kill it and get even as far as possible -- She is a woman of about 54

Paid my January room rent today --

Fair and cold -- 8° below zero at 7 o'clock this morning -- As before remarked it being "Lincoln Day," there was no session of the Legislature -- no other observance -- Bed at 12 -- 12° above zero by Arlington thermometer -- Utilized my own patent lamp stove this noon on a warmed up breakfast --

Wednesday Feb 13

Cloudy & warmer -- thawy with a few light spurts of rain hail and snow in PM -- Thermometer 9° above zero this morning, a difference of 17° from yesterday morning -- The noted Nevada lottery bill, or amendment to the State constitution, passed at last session, two years ago was to have come up on a special order in the Senate at 2 PM but was postponed till same hour tomorrow by reason of President Stubbs of the State University having to address on University matters, which he did after adjournment, at 3 PM, speaking little over an hour -- I sent brief synopsis of his talk to the Journal -- Rec'd $10 from the Journal for my last 2 weeks reporting -- Bed 12 -- cloudy and thawy -- A few light spurts of rain hail or snow during the PM. Springlike and Thawy -- Valentine Day -- 1901 Tim Dempsey Recovering 9th Nevada Lottery Knocked Out in Senate

Thursday Feb 14

Clear warm and pleasant -- thawy and springlike -- sleighing much damaged -- The lottery bill came up at 2 PM in the Senate -- Senate Concurrent Resolution No 11 -- providing for organization and regulation of a lottery in this State -- passed at last session 2 yrs ago and laid over under the Constitution for ratification by this Legislature, which in case of ratification would have to provide for election for the submitting it to a vote of the people, whether to have a lottery or no lottery -- But this Senate by a vote of 10 to 3, 2 absent declared against such ratification, and therefore the lottery scheme falls dead and defeated in the Senate, with no chance for redemption in the Assembly -- Evening I visited Tim Dempsey and it being St Valentine's Day took a big orange to each of his 2 daughters, Pearlie and Nellie by way of valentines -- Bed 12 -- still clear & thawy -- Tim Dempsey is recovering from his recent severe illness and will soon be out and at work --

Friday Feb 15

Cloudy but a little warmer and more thawy -- In AM Senate roasted the devil out of the Reno Journal for sundry capitalized squibs scattered through its columns yesterday reflecting upon the Senatorial actions and possibilities regarding voting on the lottery question -- Sent a page letter to Judge Webster this evening regarding it -- inclosing the News legislative report of today -- clipped out for him to read -- My letter of the 10th to Gardnerville Record appeared in that paper yesterday -- 1 column -- Bed at 12 -- Partially clear -- warm & thawy

Saturday Feb 16

Cloudy, with strong warm wind from westward which carried off the snow very fast -- melting so fast as to create floods in various parts of town -- temperature about 60° regular "Chinook" warm wind -- PM light rains set in assisting very materially in dissolving the snow, making the streets fearfully muddy & sloppy -- great thaw and contrast to last Sunday, Monday & Tuesday mornings: 8°, 10° and 8° below zero.
