They Took Part in "Little" Convention Before Big Democratic Pow-Wow Began

Seen at the Democratic convention tea were : Mrs. Crystal Bird Fauset, Mrs. Frances Rainey, Miss Alyce Anderson of Philadelphia, Mrs. Lorenzo Harris of Trenton, N.J., Mrs. Gertrude Skidmore, Mrs. Lucy Litman and Mrs. Nellie Hazell of Philadelphia.

Refuses

Miss Alyce Anderson, sister of Marian Anderson, has been offered a councilmanic endorsement by the Democratic Party, but has refused to accept it. She would have been eligible for nomination in the second councilmanic district. Miss Anderson said she was to conduct the nationwide competition for the musical scholarship granted annually by her sister and would be too busy with auditions to campaign for the important post.

From the toddling town of Chicago comes that delightful pair, the A. L. Jacksons and their son, A. L. Jr. The Jacksons are a tradition at Harvard, and this year they attended the graduation of their oldest son. While here they were guests on historic, picturesque Martin street, with Mrs. Boone, Miss Alyce Anderson and the Edward Henry's doing the honors.

Miss Alice Anderson, 762 S. Martin St. Phila. Pa.

Dear Alice: -

I have communicated with Mrs. Zimbalist regarding Blanche Burton. Of course it will be necessary for her to apply in the regular way so that if you will write to Miss Helen Hoopes, Secretary of Admissions and ask for a catalog and application forms, her mother will be able to fill out the application and file it with the Institute. The piano auditions are in April so I suggest that this be done at once. There are very few vacancies and she says that only great talent is likely to be accepted this Spring but I think this child has great talent and I feel that she certainly ought to be heard at that time.

Sincerely yours, Joe [signature]

If it would not unduly inconvenience you, I would appreciate your speaking with your minister to ascertain whether he would be available for this purpose and upon hearing from you, I will be pleased to send a confirmation direct to him.

I would also appreciate receiving from you some facts concerning your sister's life and activities. We will need this information for the purpose of the presentation.

FELLOWSHIP HOUSE of the Young Peoples Interracial Fellowship UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE COMMITTEE ON RACE RELATIONS OF THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS FOURTEEN THIRTY-ONE BROWN STREET, PHILADELPHIA, PENNYSLVANIA, PHONE POPLAR 5448 Marjorie Penny, Executive Secretary Julia Smith, Community Worker

February 2, 1942

Miss Alyce Anderson 762 South Martin Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Dear Miss Anderson,

Perhaps you can guess how deeply grateful Fellowship is for your help in obtaining Miss Anderson's gift to this House, when I tell you that coal was gone, our funds depleted, and no immediate aid was in sight. But far beyond the desperately needed material help is the encouragement the gift gives to our young group. I so much hope that you will be a guest of the House in the near future.

Most sincerely,

Marjorie Penny
