When any of the potato crop is to be used for planting the following spring, the tubers for this purpose should be selected from the bulk before storing is attempted. The bestsize tuber for seed is one weighing about two and a half ounces. Weigh a specimen and then use this as a model in selecting the others. When the desired quantity has been obtained spread them out in the open, exposed to sun and air, to "green." They should then be stored in shallow boxes containing a single layer only, placing each tuber vertically on its stem end. The boxes should be kept in a light, airy place if that be possible. It is a mistake to store seed potatoes in a heap, even when only a limited quantity is required, nor should they be kept in a dark position, as this induces premature sprouting and, if the sprouts have to be removed, weakening of the tubers follows.
