Bassett, Nebr, Sept 18, 1915 To the Governor of Utah Salt Lake City Utah,

Dear Sir

As a citizen of the U.S. and a lover of justice.

I beg of you to see to it that Joseph Hillstrom (now under sentence) is granted & secured a new trial, another chance to prove himself innocent as I believe him innocent and a man working for the good of humanity. Hoping this will be favorably received. I am yours for rights and justice. W. T. Jeffryes, M.D.

Salt Lake City Sept 19- 1915

To our Hon Governor Wm Spry Atty General and Board of Pardons or Whom it may concern

We must undertake ansd write you not as strangers but as old time citizens since the sixties and later having been qualified voters having held office taking up homsteads being jerryman & etc & never challenged on account being a full fletched naturalized citizen with first and second papers on hand but this is not the case with a good many as we have no doubt believe and know that several thousand of our population living in Salt Lake City and county and good many more living in the state especial Englis spoken people which immigrated from Europe and never took their first nor second naturalizaion papers out although voted at our elections, taking up homsteads

having held office- City- County and state- serving on Jurry, Grand Jurry as well as other Jurries and were not entitled or have little right.

Not alone English spoken people that flimflamed us- making us believe in telling that they were born in America Utah and elsewere other foreign nations from Europe have taken some stand after speaking American English to perfection. but no legal right have their sons which are born here in Utah or elsewere and now at the age of 35-40 yrs up to 50 years serving as jurrors, taking up land voting at elections & etc as they are not nat citizens whenever their Father hadn't his naturalization papers taken out in full. We have no doubt and believe that such people never connected or amongst the jurry in Mr Hillstroms trials convicting or imaginay not circumstantial evidence. We all know that there was a time we could vote upon our first paper but such been all off Joe many a years

us old foggirs that been in the U.S. Army during the Civil War and later on have allways taken for granted being entitled to all our priviledge like a legal American citizen but we were mistaken. As long as those iligal votersvoted our way which was Republican we kept mum and had nothing to say and this is done as yet.

The writer and our push about a dozen are not socialist- prohibitous nor I.W.W. men. Furhermore we must state that a man or woman who keeps a secret like such as in the Hillstroms case should be glorifyed and have the appreciation of everybody. What would we say and think if a Mason give our Masonic secrets away telling them to his best friend man or woman or to the public which been done years ago. We do most anything & can do it as in the case of Hon Mr. Diehl who was our secty of the Lodge for many a years- received for his long & standing service our 33rd Degree Which shouldn't been done but it was

done also the woman Mrs Geddirs in Dave. Eckles case kept the secrets to herself when in Washington outrial and schield Dav. Ecklesbut John Becks wifes sister & cousin put the caibasch on John and sworn him into the pen. good many other were in same fix but the secret kept in silence.
