Phillip Giles Box 1000 Sandstone, Minnesota 50072

Dear Mr. Giles:

It was good to hear from you and to learn that you will soon be released from Sandstone and returning to Milwaukee.

I was also glad to hear that you have taken vocational training courses in welding and blueprint reading, for this will greatly enhance your prospects for getting a good job.

Since receiving your letter, I have been making some preliminary inquiries on your behalf, and presently I feel rather confident that a job can be made available to you upon your release.

Employers, however, want to know as much as they can about people they are considering hiring. Therefore, I would ask that you send me a biographical sketch of yourself, including your age, schooling, previous employment, and your police record. Try to be completely objective and candid, because you can help yourself more by being open and above board than by trying to conceal those facts you would prefer to forget. Please send the information to me as soon as possible.

Hoping to hear from you soon, I am Sincerely yours,

VEL R. PHILLIPS Alderman 6th Ward

Ald. Phillips Refiles Open Housing Plea

Ald. Vel R. Phillips Wednesday again introduced an open housing ordinance which was defeated by the common council three months ago. Mrs. Phillips said in a letter to the common council that it had "leaned heavily" on a city attorney's opinion when it rejected her last open housing proposal. The opinion said the field of open housing legislation had been pre-empted by the state with the passage of a state open housing law in 1965.

She said equal consideration now should be given to an opinion by Atty. Gen. La Follette Oct. 3. La Follette said state law did not limit the power of municipalities in regulating housing. The attorney general's opinion said there was "specific language to show a legislative intent that municipalities are to use their delegated powers to complement state law." When the ordinance was defeated, 18 to 1, July 12, Mrs. Phillips said she would introduce it again after the necessary 90 day interval had elapsed. She said she would introduce it every 90 days until it was adopted. The need for city legislation continues, she said. Discrimination still exists in the sale, lease, rental and financing of housing in Milwaukee, she charged. Under the proposed ordinance, violators would be fined $25 to $500 or jailed up to 90 days for discriminating against prospective buyers, renters or borrowers.

Cameras, Watches Stolen Burglars took $50 in cash and cameras, watches and other merchandise worth $2000 Tuesday night from Schutkin's pharmacy, 1535 W. North Av., police reported.

VEL PHILLIPS YOU WANT OPEN HOUSING WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT THIS STUPID MISSISSIPPI IN REVERSE THE BLACK KLAN

2 Civil Rights Figures Admit Holdup

Two civil rights figures from Milwaukee were in Kenosha county jail Friday awaiting sentencing on armed robbery charges. Reynolds C. Moore, 19, of 928 W. Meinecke av., and Frederick L. Evers, 19, of 2556-A N. 11th st., pleaded guilty to taking $139 at gun point July 1 at a Clark service station in Kenosha. They have also been charged with taking $135 at a Clark station in Racine July 6. The youths' attorney, Assemblyman Lloyd A. Barbee, has asked that the two cases be consoliated. Moore is president of the Milwaukee and Wisconsin youth councils of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He is also the second vice-president of the former state NAACP and a former vice-chairman of the regional NAACP youth council. They reportedly were en route to the NAACP national convention in Los Angeles at the time of their arrest in Kenosha July 6, shortly after the Racine holdup. Kenosha police said they found $135 and a pistol in the youth's car. The police said they had been alerted by a witness to the Racine robbery who followed the getaway car to Kenosha. Moore and Evers entered their guilty pleas Monday before Kenosha County Judge Earl Morton after waiving preliminary hearing. The judge ordered a presentence investigation and set sentencing for 9 a.m. Monday. The attendant at the Kenosha service station, Dale Alleman, told authorities that the station was closed at the time of the robbery. He said that Moore and Evers knocked on the door and asked for a road map. When he opened the door, Moore and Evers took the money at gun point, Alleman said. The defendants were held in jail after failing to post $10,- 000 bail set by Judge Morton.
