Dear Vel,

Thanks to you, the job as Capitol Police came through. I received a letter from Mr. Bechtel, Senator Nelson Administrative Assistant September 13th telling me about an opening and to come by and discuss it with him. I was literally hired immediately and started September 28th.

Since I had registered for school I took the 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM shift I go to school from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Tuesday and Thursday and 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays. Hopefully by September 1967 I'll be going to school during the day and working at night.

Loretta and I are truly grateful to you for your letter to Senator Nelson for without it, this certainly would not have been possible.

Thanks again Sincerly Reginald Dundins

[City of Milwaukee Letterhead: Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53202 October 7, 1966]

Mr. George Watts 761 North Jefferson Street Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Dear George:

Here is the information that we discussed regarding Phillip Giles. I am sending you the back correspondence in order to give you additional background information. I am also sending more than one copy of his letter to me, plus the biographical data, in case you need it for individual employer prospects.

The record is extremely bleak, but I have met him and I sincerely believe that he believes what he stated in his letter, that at this point he wants only to be a "hard-working, law-abiding citizen like everybody else, before it's too late."

Whatever you can do in his behalf will not only be greatly appreciated by Mr. Giles, but also deeply appreciated by me. Thank you very much.

Cordially yours,

Vel R. Phillips Alderman 6th Ward

Reverend E. B. Phillips Greater Galilee Baptist Church 2432 North Teutonia Avenue Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53206

Dear Reverend Phillips:

Voter Registration for the general election in the City of Milwaukee will close on October 19. At this time, there is no indication that we will be able to reduce by any large number the staggering total of nearly 100,000 potential eligible but unregistered voters in our city.

Estimates are that at least one-third of that total who are not registered and therefore cannot vote are residents of the 1st, 6th, 7th and 13th Wards.

We urgently seek your help in reaching some of these thousands of our neighbors in the final days of the registration period.

We urge you to declare Sunday, October 16 Voter Registration Sunday in your church and to devote at least a portion of your sermon to this vital subject.

We believe you can do more in these closing days than anyone else in the community to see that at least a share of those who are eligible to vote do register at firehouses, libraries and other neighborhood locations.

Information about these registration locations and hours that they are open is enclosed.

We will be most grateful to you for joining us in urging all to exercise their rights by registering to vote....BEFORE OCTOBER 19.

Sincerely,

ASSEMBLYMAN LLOYD BARBEE SUPERVISOR ISAAC COGGS SUPERVISOR CALVIN MOODY ALDERMAN VEL PHILLIPS
