Since I then hoped to stay in Washington & do a work with the department women & I still hope to do this sometime Miss Gerry told me some stories of the experiences of some women there which if written out nicely & printed would be very interesting & would bring subscribers to the Tribune if printed there. Of course the National have the control of the suffrage money of the country, we can only watch for somebody who is rich who is not bound to them & then get her to take a prominent place in ours & use her money for the cause. Let her be the president of course I should

6 do all I could just the same. There is such a woman somewhere we must look for her. Of course Mrs. Hooker is always an uncertain quantity. She goes so much upon impulse that I cold never depend upon her even in her best days. Once in O. when I had laid out a beautiful campaign for one season, counting on her aid I was met by the statement that no farther work was necessary in the suffrage cause she had had a revelation from heaven that that season Jesus Christ

7 with Mrs. Horace Greely and Mrs. Josephine Griffing as his angels was coming in the heavens according to the scripture & they were going to do all this work! & she expected to also to be called that season to preach a suffrage sermon in Brother Henry's pulpit! There was nothing more required Of course a letter from Susan would start her. Susan wrote the letter because Hooker belonged to the Federal no other reason. as long as Susan lives all shall have to meet her insidious underhanded opposition Of course she will die sometime

and then there will be defections from the National Mrs. Catt is a silly vain trifling false woman she can't hold the people after Susan goes. Anna Shaw supplies all the brains they have & she can not do ever thing. Well the result of it all is that we must lie low, work in a small way, as we can, and look out for better times. 9 celebrate Mrs. Stanton's birth day in our church here. Please send me a copy of your paper of last year about Mrs. Stanton & anything else you have that will be good on the program. It is impossible for me to be in Washington in November. I have intended to spend December there. It would be useless for me to try to attend the National they insulted me in the most shameful manner at Minneapolis. They will not allow me to speak in the business meeting. I can not with any self respect appear at their business meeting. Keep people interested O. Brown
