ReadAboutContentsHelp
This collection documents the experiences of a California family during the early 20th Century, including the First World War. There are 109 letters written by Charles E.H. Bates beginning in his childhood in Alameda, California, and ending in the late 1920s as he begins a career in medicine. Letters sent from California and France while Bates served with the American Expeditionary Forces date from January 1918 through May 1919. There is a larger collection of 784 letters to Bates from his family:  father, mother, and four brothers, as well as friends, including the woman who became his wife. Joc isn't going to the Beta initiation to-night because he is so tired. He told me to give Sned his love along with mine.

Yesterday after you left Geraldine came over. The folks got home from their ride about an hour after you left. In the evening Martha & Joc went down to your house. I studied and went to bed early.

I hope you enjoyed the lecture last night, dear, but I hope you won't decide to go to Labrador.

Sweetheart, I want this to go on the next delivery and as it is collected in fifteen minutes I will have to come to a close. I hope that I get a letter from my sweetheart to-morrow.

Love, Marion.

My dearest one,

Just got home from college. Received your letter dear, and it was better than any valentine going. The kiss that you sent me is digesting now, only I wish it was a real one. I am glad that you liked the valentine I sent. The reason I sent it Sat. was because I didn't know that you got mail on Sunday and I wanted you to get it Monday.

Last night after I mailed your letter, I studied and then

went to bed. Didn't have to go early this morning. Mrs. Wright started my dress to-day.

I am so glad you enjoyed the lecture. I think I would have liked it myself. It has been simply freezing here all day and I bet there is snow on the Mt. Hamilton range again.

I will pull hard for Cal because it would be terrible if you lose $5.00. I think that you will win because I heard Cal had a wonderful team. But why are you [pulling - crossed out] betting on Cal, dear?

To-night I have lots of History to read. I have and examination in it on Thursday. Gee, I wish you were home, dear,

I get so lonesome for you sometimes, especially when I get such nice letters from you, I just wish you were here to give you a big hug and kiss. I don't know what I'll do if you go East this summer, you will probably find another sweetie back there. I am not worrying about it much yet, dear.

Dinner bell just rang. Lots of love & everything else,

Marion.

Thursday,

Feb. 17, 1921.

Dear old Sned,

Mother and I have just gotten home from a shopping expedition in Oakland. I got some new goods for a dress. I wanted to get some suede pumps but we were in a hurry so did not have time.

We didn't have any lecture in Anthropology yesterday and as I didn't feel well came home. I only missed a lecture in Hygiene but didn't feel able to stay. I studied History most of the afternoon and slept the rest. When I got up I did more History. After dinner I
