This collection documents the experiences of a California family during the early 20th Century, including the First World War. There are 109 letters written by Charles E.H. Bates beginning in his childhood in Alameda, California, and ending in the late 1920s as he begins a career in medicine. Letters sent from California and France while Bates served with the American Expeditionary Forces date from January 1918 through May 1919. There is a larger collection of 784 letters to Bates from his family:  father, mother, and four brothers, as well as friends, including the woman who became his wife. see those war pictures. I read in the paper last week that they were going to be shown down at Stanford and was hoping that you would get a chance to see them. I guess they were very interesting, especially for you after being right there. I would liked to have seen them too, I wonder if they will come up here.

We are talking of going down to Calaveras Canyon on Tuesday, that is if the weather will permit. At present it is cloudy and has been raining this morning. I wish you could go with us, dear, but I suppose it would hardly pay to come up in the morning and go back again at night. I wish you

could come up Monday evening and go back Tuesday evening, but I wish lots of things that never happen.

I haven't very much studying to do this week-end. Only two chapters to read for Anthropology and a little English to do. We have to have a book read for Anthro a week from to-morrow and write a 1500 word composition criticising the book. I went up to the library the other day to get a book but there wasn't one that I wanted. I am going to try again to-morrow and if there aren't any, I am going to get it at the Oakland library. There are about seven books in Sex and

Marriage and I wanted one of them.

I don't know what we are going to do to-day. Probably take a ride this afternoon. The little car is all finished. They had it out yesterday and Dad says it runs grand just like a Pierce Arrow. They towed it a little while with the Packard because the engine is so stiff.

Martha and Joc are going down to Fritchie's for dinner to-day. Mother asked the Tabor's to come here. I wanted to write to you last night, dear, so that you would get a letter to-day, but we hurried so after dinner to go to Oakland

that I didn't have time, and when I got home of course it was too late. I am going to mail this early so you will get it to-morrow.

I guess you are very busy studying. You surely had a great time at your place the other night. I would love to have seen those boys crawling on the roof early in the morning. I bet they were swearing mad, but they deserved it.

Earl Payne, a boy out at College asked to me to got to the Freshie Glee. It is to be some time in March. I told him I thought I could go. He said he thought the date was [up - crossed or] the eighteenth but they have not fully decided yet.

I guess you are getting tired of my ramble and wish I would quit, but I just feel like writing to you this morning I guess it is because I miss my Sned so much I am thinking of you all the time, my mind is always down at Stanford wondering what you are doing. Guess it wouldn't hurt me to clean up for dinner so I will run along, dear. I am sending you lots of love and kisses and hugs to make up for what we didn't get last night and to-day.

Love, Mar.
