Still blowing a light gale from the East
with occasional snow flurries. The water
sky noted yesterday is still visible and I
am sure that the whole ocean is open out-
side of the belt of ice that is hanging to
the beach. A couple of sea gulls seen. Drifting.

Late this afternoon a lead opened up about 2 miles
S. E. of camp and altho it was drifting and blowing
a strong gale from the East we went out to see how seal-
ing was. We could not go straight out from camp because
of young ice but had to go along the beach for a mile or so
and then south. The lead from E.N.E to W.S.W. and was of
various widths, from a few yards to several hundreds yards.
We stayed by it by (by ''we'' I mean Crawford and I) for
some time but did not see a thing but two old squaw
ducks. No bear tracks were seen and only a few very
old fox tracks. A couple of sea gulls were seen at
camp this morning. Now (midnight) a very light
breeze from the W. cold and clear with a beautiful
display of Aurora

some time during the night, but late this afternoon opened
up again. The weather was good enough today to move
but on the sea ice along the beach the young ice is
