23rd Febr 1854 Fencing around fresh field part of Our Hands Fed Sandy & Jordan malling Henry gone to Farris’s mill 15 Bushels wheat for flour & 6 Bushels Corn for meal — & 2 Bags Cotton to Pick etc etc — Fine weather about this time,-

24 Sent to Roll Logs at E G L. Plowing malling & halling wood, -

25 Plowing Halling wood for Mr Neal ½ day & Rails round Corn field malling & fencing etc etc

26 Rained all day long nearly Thundered quite hard & longer Branches very high Halling leaves waggon & Cart. Fed Sandy 27& Jacob malling Balance with clem Raking leaves this morning clear & moderate

28 Henry is to go to CH to day for Mr Jas P. Lewis to carry the Miss Lewis up there Cutting & Plowing, Halled out straw

=1854March 1st A Beautiful day Sandy Plowing Jordan Halling wood with cart making a part of our new ground fence Jacob & Fed malling

9th Sent to Mill Millers 6 Bushels Corn for meal. finished striping new Barn back Barn Garden

11 Plowed for Cotton & in garden sandy for corn Halling up Oats to sew Halled manure to Plant Beds & manured Beds on branch above House & at mountain My Dear Nannie Jere & Sallie gone to Mr Fitzgeralds to day, Rolled Logs yesterday to day Fed malling & chinking Log Heaps – turned cooler to day —

13 Trod out Oats to Sew Laid the balance of fence at new ground & making of it Jordan & Sandy Plowed for Corn clear fine day = Fed malling in new ground wood & Rails

14 Began to Sew Oats 3 Plows Henry halling Rails balance fencing malling etc.

1854 Friday 11th Rained a little last night & this morning it Thundered lightened & it rained more or less till 10 or 11 Oclock, ground wet, the prettiest rain we have had this Summer this evening after Dinner we went in the woods to Sawing & getting shingles - Mr Wyatt getting,- Sandy Cutting down another

12th Mr Wyatt getting shingles Fed & Henry sawing Sandy still Cutting shingles trees Jordan Plowing up Turnip Patch & going to Sew to day as soon as he gets ready

14 Rained Friday 11 & Saturday night finely, this morning we are fanning Out wheat Drying fruit worming Tobacco Plowing up Rye Lot etc Henry gone to E. G Lewis’s to Raise Barn — clear & Hot

15 Sent Fed to Farris Mill 12 Bus. wheat for flour, & got it all fine Rain this evening Henry getting Old shingles Balance gathered Queen apples & then went to work in Tobacco in corn field Mr Wyatt getting shingles in wood, Jordan & Sandy finished fallowing lot for Rye

16 Fed Toping Tobacco generally Henry getting shingles finished working Tobacco in Corn field working on Road this evening across mountain Nannie gone to Mrs Hunts — I went to Miss Sarah McCullocks Fallowing up stubble field owens clearingfor what

21 Augt went to Court. & to see old Bro Stone, who is very low Toping worming & succoring Tobacco

22 & finished that worming Do again Henry & Mr Wyatt getting shingles

23 Mr Wyatt went to Blanks to Raise Barn

24 - Harrowing in & Sewing Rye in lot By Granary, Sawing yesterday again

1857 Oct 14th Weaning Hesters second Mule Colt Mary, last night,= Our old Corn is about to give out 3 Turns brot at this time which is all & lasted well, very fine favorable fall, we have now at this near 700 sticks of Tobacco perhaps more standing We have not cut over our new ground but once, lot twice right Smart standing in Lo =Daniel R Hunt Esqr esqr & Miss Emma Mebane was to be maried last night in Richmond at 3rd Presbyterian church – etc etc. Raining nearly all this day Brot back the wheat card to mill This morning – getting wood & stumps for Barn at Crews & fresh ground worming & succoring our Tobacco again to day firing Tobacco nearly all day —

15th Still rains a little firing Tobacco Finishing worming & succoring If it does not rain,- Mr. E. G. Lewis gave me a young Boar Pig, sent for him this morning — cleared off in Evening Dug Irish Potatoes in part

16th clear in morning soon sun shone bright & very soon it clouded up & about 8 & 8 Oclock it rained hard & Turned cold, Kill sheep; firing Tobacco Yet & wish to cut my Tobacco this day - If it stops raining in time Did not get Done tho very cool no frost turned a little warmer after dark & we stoped —

17th Finished cutting & Pilling Tobacco & no frost. Our meeting at S. Stone fine weather ———

18th Meeting day & fine weather

19 I started to Court at 4 Oclock & got back By Summer this day we are plowing land for wheat & Cutting down Corn fired 2 Barns this morning weathered Turned a good deal cooler, run 3 Plows this day

27th march. Finishing sewing Oats at stony pint & will finish there to day overseer getting Rafters for Corn shelling Room to be put to Corn houseHous shortly Jordan Coltering at Crews Piling wood & Rails finishing new ground fence Joining the mountain field to day Sewing Oats at Crews, LetBig Henry have 12 lbs Bacon this 27th day of March for 1 month, Jacob has been down after Blade fodder & Bacon & Caddles [Candles?] Mr EG Lewis cut spayed & marked 14th shoats this day & Turned out a Black one for a thats with PigSow Beautiful weather about this time –

28th Nannie & me & children went to Cedar Hill & Mr Jno D Hunts to day fine day —

29th Sewing Oats at Crews, Fencing around granary Lot this morning & then at new ground Piling wood & Rails, Jordan carried Black Boar to mountain springs woods Pasture with Hunt Sow etc, - & then Halled up one stack blade Fodder this morning - a little cooler this morning Jordan coltering crossing to Hill at overseers Malissa had a Boy Child this morning after sun Rise, Sent for Doct Thompson but the Boy did not get him,- Mrs Neal here Sent to Mill with Cart 3 Turns Corn all for us tho one is for overseer, but he will take one of ours ground at Mill & whats in his Bag will be ours Send also 2½ Bushels wheat for overseer, All to Yates Mill

30th Rolled Logs to day Did not get done

31st Rolled again to day & expect to finish

April 1st Finished rolling Logs this have Rolled in all nearly 3 daysmorning &

1859 March 3rd Sent to Mill for overseer Brought Turn meal for us left his there we Thrashed Out one stack Oats

4th Mr Roby quit on acct of no coal about 3 Oclock Halling leaves wood Claiborne malling Covered Potatoe Patch halled leaves in Big lot & Corn field, I went down to Yates Mr Lewis’s & aspen Grove, fine windy day My Boar gone Two or Three weeks –

5. Winding & Cleaning Oats to Sew. Henry laying off Corn Land claiborne beding Fencing etc etc Mr W Chumbly & Balance This day Swapted off Rose with Tom Owen for a Jenny named Jane & her Jenny Colt. Jenny about 4 yrs old little Colt about 4 or 5 months old,– jenny is a female donkey

6th. Beautiful day & all gone to Edge Hill to meeting but myself,- weather moderate

7th Jonathan Dawson came here very tight last night & stayed all night, very sick from it - This morning about light it commenced raining all morning till 12 then we were Shelling Corn & fixing plows & Harrow to Plank Corn, in evening pulled down & Halled old shop to burn etc etc etc Jacob left this evening with Mr Moses,

8 Nanny & Kate Sallie & negro Catham went to Doct Thompsons got some teeth drawn & wewere fixing overseers Garden etc till night

9th Finished overseers Truck Patch this morning Squared barn Logs & Plowing for Oats in big Lot fine weather

10th Plowing for Oats & fencing Began this morning to Sew Oats, Jacob commenced Plowing this morning. Here fine weather I went yesterday to Aspen Grove gave out
