1856 Feby 15th This has been truly a rough Winter On me having to attend to Fannies W Fitzgeralds business to go to Charlott & to Meads ville on Jacobs acc^t & found Jacob sick in Charlotte, - & the weather so extremely rough snowy & Cold now cloudy & like for rain or Snow again, malling wood in new ground & Cutting there or rather in Second yrs ground Henry halled up little stack Oats this morning & then halling wood alse break =ing flax my wife gone to Mr Jno. D Hunts to day – –– &c. ————— Fixing this evening take down old prize Barn Tobacco - Lambs coming & Dying Sheep Dying one Sow missing this morning

Feby 18 went to Court Swapt Horses for Fannie Philip for Horse Top gave $25 for Boot Mrs Coleman Sow found Dead last Monday morning

22 Halled Logs to Yates Saw mill 2 or 3 days say 2 Logs for Palings & 2 for Railing etc Finished malling in new ground Raking for fence etc began to mall on mountain getting Garden Posts, Sent to Mill & got 8 Bus meal & 8 Bushel of wheat into flour Halled up stack fodder & leaves in old prize Barn & one back Garden I went to Chalk Level Colo Dickinsons etc to day, about Johns matter & wrote to A McKee about James McCullocks Debt etc

23 Malling & Cutting wood for Plant^{on Road} Bed Getting up Garden Post & halling wood Fine weather, loosing our sheep & lambs went to Riceville to day

Feby 27th 1856 Walter Evans came this morning [illegible] Raining this morning, Shelling Corn shoemaking alse & Kitty spining, Hung up Balance of Pork say 24 m 24 S 24 H 11 Joles 83 in all Shelling Corn 3 or 4 of them,- moderate weather

28. Fencing & Halling wood & Rails Jordan & Sandy Malling at stony pint Mr Evans began 27th wednesday to work on Garden tho it rained in morning Thursday he is at work on it to day making most 2 days - Henry is going to Hall rails this evening around Corn field fence

29th Fencing this day Henry gone to saw & Griss Mill Carr^d Log for Paling & 2 Bags for meal, one at mill bring home & railing Fine weather Fannie come down & staid 3 days Sandy malling at stony pint —

March 1st Raining Halling Racks & taking down Tobacco - — I went up to mount airy & in presence of Mr W^m C Grasty Registered a letter to Pumpkin pile PO Polk County Geo enclosing $49 S C money to Edmond D Johns being his part of Francis McCullocks Debt Due McCullocks Est,- — Cold Rain^{to day} Mr Evans worked 3 days p^d him & he is gone

8th Sent to Saw & Griss mill 4 Bus corn for meal & 1 Log for Pailings got 4 Bus meal, Plowing for Corn Burnt Plant Bed on Road & sewed it this week p^t not burnt, but Guanoed, malling wood, cleaning up in corn field made 2 Bridges to day - Planted Irish Potatoes to day & Goard Seed, etc Covered all our Plant Beds yesterday Mr W^m Dews Died this day soon in morning & Buried on Sunday the 9th March 1856

23 began to Cut wheat Hired abram Crews he is cutting to day fine day – Jordan Lowry & Buck choping about in Potatoes etc - Just getting out very Hot weather –

24 Fine growing weather cutting wheat when we can working new ground tobacco this morning & then to cutting wheat as soon as Dew gets off Replanting by Bee Gums this morning Jordan & Buck going to mill 6 Bus car^d & will bring back 8 there

25th Cutting Rye & wheat weeding Tobacco on Branch & new ground ¬

25th Plowing some in Corn Lila & Lowry Bal Balance all cutting wheat except Fed Buck & Jordan began to cut wheat mondy & this

26. & 27 Cutting wheat & finished about 12 oclock Arch alse & Eliza stayed 1½ days replanted Lot & mountain to day. Shearing sheep – – –

1856 July 12th Finished Laying by corn with Plows, this evening - & nearly done hilling up new ground, Tobacco ¬– –

14th Plowing & Hilling up fresh ground next to Crews Doct T. came again to see Jordan clear hot Day

15th Finished Plowing fresh ground by Crews and Hilling it up & expect to finish to day

16 Sent Buck to Shop have Henry clay & Pompeys Shod Halling up wheat Plowing & Hilling up Lot Tobacco Have had a fine Day tho very Hot

17 Kate & me went to Rices to day very hot & dry Halling up wheat & working Lot Tobacco

18 worming Tobacco this morning & expect to try to finish getting up wheat to day Sent to Mill 2 Turns Corn for meal & to get 4 or five Turns there —

21 Plowing & Hilling up Lot Tobacco & p^s over on the mountain Henry & alse halling up & stacking Oats —^{or making reads for stacking} I went to Court this day

22nd Halling^{Doct T. came here Sunday call visit} up & stacking Oats this morning Kitty Sick, fine Rain last Friday evening

23rd Hilling up Tobacco on mountain Halling & stacking Oats to day my wife gone to Mrs Hunts Kitty sick yet. Took down Some of Our striped Tobacco this morning fine weather – I went to Court last monday – – – –

24 Finished yesterday stacking Oats put 10 stacks up & halled one Load in House finished Hilling up tobacco on mountain & pulled up flax clear & Dry – choping tobacco on Johns Branch & choping out cotton Henry Halling Rails & fixing fence & putting hogs in [water stain] Toped Tobacco on Johns branch & ^{to day}new ground [water stain] by Crews this evening

Commencing 11th March 1856. This morning I Fed my Dogs as usual Caesar I reckon got Chocked & Dyed in 2 minutes or 4 minutes, we are treading out Oats this morning fencing about Tobacco Tobacco lot. Very like for Snow Soon this morning Very cold indeed windy & tremendous yesterday — Jordan Halling Rails around Corn field fence & lot at House yesterday & to day – — wrote to Dan^l Brown Indiana in this month etc etc

14 Plowing for corn till yesterday began to sew Oats Plowing Tobacco Lot by Garden Henry & Jacob Finishing Garden, Jordan halled Rails 2 days this week & finished malling wood in new ground, alse cleaning out Stable, Kitty Clem etc cleaning up on Branch Light full of Snow the 13th Thursday in evening

14th A beautifull day indeed clear & moderate

15th Went to meeting at Strait Stone fine day -

16th Beautiful day. pretty Cool & dry at this time Plowing up & sewing Oats On branch malling wood & Halling out new ground took up Irish Potatoes this day set out Turnips for seed about 100 in Turnip Patch last week,- clem alse & Kitty Piling wood in new ground,-

17th Raining to day Sewing some Oats Shoe mending fencing sent Henry to store, sent 1/6 for Paint & allum

20 Finished fencing Sewing Oats by Malissa House windy - - Fannie White here this evening Jerry & George Edd finished nailing on old Paling [water stain]day - Striping to day & yesterday [smudge][water stain] Rain, sent Mrs Moseleys will to [water stain] Geo. - Sawed about 40 [water stain] etc
