1857 Thursday 23rd We are Plowing & Hilling up lot tobacco in morning & then Halling up wheat waggon & cart & all hands etc showering weather nannie gone to Mrs H finished hilling up new ground Tobacco —

Friday 24th My nannie coming home this morning " " nearly done halling up wheat will commence halling up Oats to day. working tobacco in Lot this morning. Sent 4 Bus. corn & 4½ wheat to Eat to yates. Carrd 1 Bus wheat for Crews - etc Fine weather about this time, no rain this week Buck & Jerry Smith gone to mill

Saturday 25th I went to Fannies, Stack some oats choping & thinning mountain field corn Rained a little Sunday evening after I returned from S S S C

26th Sunday Our folks had Holliday Yesterday -

26th little shower Rain in evening

27th Henry Harrowing Corn Jordan & Sandy Plowing Tobacco Balance Hilling it up Sent Sandy to Mr Neals after Corn lent them & give them ½ Bushel wheat

28th Henry Painting on Carriage House Sandy & Jordan Harrowing Corn, dry Hot weather Balance Hilling up fresh ground Tobacco by Crews

29 Finishing fresh ground tobacco toped & worked nannies by Cow rack Sandy Harrowing corn Halled leaves in stables Henry claiborne Jord -an & alse Stacking oats, trying to finish Dry Hot weather & Corn sufferingfor rain gone to stoney pint to chop & thin corn etc

30th Rained a fine Rain last Evening & night & we this morning replanted pt of our fresh ground next to Mr Crews — Finished stacking Oats yesterday - this morning clearing off there & fencing in Oats stacks - like for more Rain picking wood etc etc.

1857 Blankets given out this 20th Novr 1857 FederickNovr 20 2, alse 1, Lila 1, little Henry 1 - Jordan 1, Malissa 1 for her children,= Hats or Caps Given out, 1 to Sandy 1 to Jerry Smith, & 1 to Abraham, - This has been a very Cold day & Shucked but very little Corn,- I went to Riceville but got no money — ==

21st Housing Corn & shucking finished shoe making clear cold day not quite as cold as yesterday.

22nd Sunday about such a day as yesterday weather moderate some Fannie stayed here last night went home this morning

23rd commenced raining to day & stoped us from shucking I went for Mr Pigg to Hillfield very disagreeable in evening - making Jerrys shoes etc making brooms Baskets etc —

24th Housing & shucking corn to day all day Cold day- did not get done Housing what was in pen, —

25. Housing this morning & then Halling out of field, sent Robin to shop Housed in all up to this time 125 or 130 Barrels including all we have used now Halling up again between Branches in fresh field & next to overseers house still very Cold windy weather

26 Halling up corn 15 Loads —

27 Killed Beef Red, shucking Corn & putting away shucks, Halled, Let abram Crews have cart & steers ½ day making 1 whole day for which he is to help me 2 days himself fine clear weather quite cold —— Jacob P. came home from Fannies on Thursday 16th Novr 1957

4th February 1858 Begun to Rain about 10 Oclock last night & sometime in the night began to Snow Horses runaway coming back from Millers Mill yesterday& this morning Snow 6 or 8 Inches Deep has & we are striping Tobacco, & putting snow in ice House,= to day= Trees very full of snow & Roads stoped up, cloudy & like for rain all day

5th Snowed & Rained last night a little & cloudy this morning, Striping Tobacco at new prize Barn, one she[e]p Died last night

6th Part cutting wood Henry & Jordan Halling wood from mountain, fresh ground Halled wood at Chumblys & 1 Load of wood to Mr Neals Found part of our Hogs over on the mountain next to Mr Pringles, but could not get them home Clear day not very cold, Snow melted but little yet

Febry 9th cutting up by overseers House Henry Compl= =aining. Pal. Sick Doct Thompson came to see Pal Pal. has very Soar Throat, - my Hogs gone again Jacob got ½ lb Cotton for Kitty to spin,Cutting & trying to get done by overseers house cleared off this morning & windy & cool, we hope Pal is a little better, Halling wood,

-10th. Cutting & finished by overseers House Halling wood to day & halled out Straw - Turned cold in evening my hogs gone again found some of themto day -

11th. Malling at mountain Spring alse burning Brush, nannie gone to Mrs Hunt to night very cold this morning, 14 Lambs to this time Henry has been complaining for 3 days & in house

12th Began to Snow this morning Sent Jordan & Buck to hall 2 Loadswood for Miss Neals Shelling corn making Bro[o]ms etc etc not very cold — Wind N,E,- nannie come back in the Snow this morning & Horse threw her & Jerry at the gate flat on the ground & did not hurt [water stain] Snowing yet late in evening Corn shelter broke to day & took 2 or 3 hours [water stain] at 2 oclock in evening about 4 Inches

26th Febry 1848 Rolled Logs at Jacobs to day overseer & 4 hands from here, making 5 got done by ½ after 12 Oclock, come home & finished malling next to Overseers house Henry Carried Some nubbins Top fodder shucks & some straw to Jacobs & went after Chumblys things at Motleys & did not get back till 10 or 11 Oclock ¬— alse & Abram burning Brush to day Beautiful day for business moderateweather

27th Beautiful morning again making 2 good days in this morning Opening Tobacco in old prize Barn & new, this morning malling burning brush at mountain Spring again, Henry plowing Fillmore & Robin,- in Tobacco Lot ¬ Jacob covered his plant Beds yesterday brushwith

28th and last day of this month fine morning making only 3 days good weather for business a little cloudy this morning-, moderate

March 1st Monday my wife went to Mrs Hunts yesterday & last evening Mr Jno D Hunt & family Came with her home last evening & night it Rained this morning Mr Hunt gone & like for falling weather Doran Hunt right sick Plowing Big & little Henry Chumbly sick barely about Jordan & Jerry Smith halling out chaff Cobbs & out of Granary & then will hall up Stack fodder from mountain balance malling & burning brush etc etc ¬– – halled out straw

2nd It Rained a little yesterday & snowed a little about night & then cleared cold & windy & [damage] morning very cold malling & burning brush Henry Halling wood,- part of our [damage] up last night,- clear & Cold

1858 March 6th Henry Halling wood balance malling etc alsePiling wood, put 3 of that Sows Pigs at stoney pint in pen she has 6 now I went to Mrs Hunts In the evening it began to snow & continued till about dark & then stoped only 1 or Two Inches Deep, Getting Ice at Yates Millers etc

7th very cold this morning cleared of[f] Jacob swaped Horses with Mr Hackworth, Henry Clay gone, give $24 on the 1st july next -, so we go Thermometer down to 10- this morning at Sun rise, - Jacob here,

8th Began to Snow Sometime in the night Wind N. E. Snow nearly shoe Deep this morning & Thermometer 28 this morning The Snow & wind is nearly as bad as 18th Jany 1857 only not so cold still snowing 9 Oclock hard wind N. E. cant do any thing but feed & make fires,- I have given My Overseer Nubbins & shattered corn3 times since he came here for his Cow & chickens This is really a winters morning Our Hogs gone again - -

9th Snowed about 1 Inch Deeper last night weather moderated a little but still cloudy Snow does not melt at all from 6 to 8 Inches Deep generally, cleaned out Granary done some shoemending & but little else yesterday to day Chumbly [damage] store, we expect to Hunt Hogs [damage] shop [hilve?] Hoes etc etc to day
