5th Decr 1858. All went to aspen Grove except Henry & family,- tolerable day —

6th Raining & striping Tobacco -

7th Raining & striping Tobacco here went to Aspen Grove 6th shelling corn fanning out nearly all day fixed Grind stone

8th Still cloudy & like for Rain,

9. cleared off in evening Striping Tobacco

10. Started after Mr Cothran Chumbly at work on his House up here Fed & alse cutting wood for Plant Bed moved sheep to mountain, etc etc

18th Cothran Came last night & he takes place of Chumbly at aspen Grove Henry went to Mill got little waggon at home & meal & 1 Turn flour for Negroes at Christmas brot Load up to Cedar Hill yesterday - from Aspen Grove - Cold clear day — This morning & yesterday getting slab Timber, Henry going to Faris Mill- to day get flour Horses shod get plank etc etc etc etc - clear day — got Flour & Plank at Fariss did not get Horses shod - had Mrs Hunt 1 Bushel wheat made into flour. got some Plank —

12 went to meeting — S. Stone

13 Raining this morning, Chumbly Sandy & Jordan Came up Henry halled 2 Loads wood, - rain Stoped him, striping Tobacco till evening worked a little on overseers Houses, Still cloudy —

14th Henry Halling up Slab Timber & wood Chumbly Jordan & Sandy at work on overseer House, Covered 1 Side & Scalped Kitchen

Halled wood Cut & malled some in new ground Overseer & little Henry at work on Henrys House all day, fixing to Kill hogs in morning Jordan & Lowry come to help Francis Blanks came here between 7 & 8 Oclock wanted me to Hall his Oats down here in the road up to his House & I sent Henry & my 2 Grey Horse gone in the night

9 Given Out the negroes their Blankets Fed alse Sandy Jordan & Lowry & give Kitty one for her child at aspen grove, Give Little Henry & Jerry LilaSmith One here ^& Clem - had one Sent the Blankets to aspen Grove by Jordan, Killed Hogs here 12 in number weighing 1138 lbs here aspen G. 1777 sent Henry to Mill 5 Bus. wheat gothereoneCovercorn at mill1138 1 Turn wheat for 291.5 negroes Christmas bolled, fine morning, Sent 2½ Bushel wheat for Chumney Killed at aspen Grove & Brot here 22 Hogs1777 lbs Given overseer there 3½ Hogs weighing 300 Killed here this day 12 Hogs weighinglacking 4½ - whichI will send1738 Killed in all 3215 lb Still cold & cloudy Mr Blanks paid me One Dollar for last night & I gave ½ to Henry

10th Sent to Mrs Hunt for the nubbins She gave me & 2 Stirup Irons for waggon Halled wood Rails all day, little went after Chumneys Meal or flour overseer & & Smith at work on House laying floor etc etc Cutting & malling in new ground I went to meeting & aspen Grove this evening for benefit of negroes

11 I went to meeting to Strait Stone by in Buggymyself

12 Chumney gone to store Claiborne malling Little Henry & Smith cutting & stacking wood, Henry gone gone to mill with 1 Log for sheeting for stable & carrd 1 Bus. wheat for him & 1 Bus. for Ben & to bring back

1860 Decembr 31st We are trying to get wood 1861 Janry 1st Getting wood all day. Bob here —

" 2. Striping Tobacco in Barn on road. Miss Sarah J McCullock sent $2½ for whiskey bag & runlet & for me to send her a little sent a pint, by Taz.

3rd Striping Tobacco Henry draining Dining room, etc. Mrs Hargrave & Nannie Clement Came here last night, before I got from Riceville Mrs Hargrave hired Rhoda till 25th Decr 1861 for $25.00. Mrs Hargrave left. gone to Mrs C

4th Killed our Hogs here let Chumney have 300 lbs. Halled a little wood cut & malled wood some

5th Cut Out & salted up yesterday got wood to day Cutting & malled at new ground. I went aspen Grove to see about alse who is sick.

6 Fast day was kept by Nannie & me on the Friday the 4th Janry 1861 Fannie came here to day –

7 began to Plow & getting sills for cider house but Rain stoped us about 10 oclock going to strip Tobacco in new Barn stop raining & they went to work again in evening. did not rain much cleared off

8 Halling wood & finished getting sills for cider House & got wood balance of the — - I went down to Plantation to see alse etc she is better went from there to Mrs Hunts place rented her land to Templeton & Hubbard pr Bond etc. & then went down to D. W. Wallers. etc –

9th Rained again till towards evening I went to Whiteheads & to hunt my white sow, gone off a week - to day - & this evening halled up Logs for house, alse I hear is got worse this evening they sent for Doct Estes & me & she Died about the time Doct Estes got there, I dont know was the matter wither [with her] except colic - I reckon

Janry 10th Sent Jerry Smith to Chalk Level. Mr Chumney gone to Plantation to make alse coffin & see about her, my wife going to Mrs Colemans to see Mattie who is sick we hear Our folks are cutting & malling wood Henry is Barking ribs this morning & then to cutting wood still cloudy & like for Rain, I am going to Mr Hunts place to sell Bed, bot by allen, & he fail[e]d to comply with turns of sale & then I want to go to aspen Grove to see about burying alse this morning she was buried Mr Chumney made coffin

11th Mrs Hargrave here last night & went homethis morning Raising cider house to day clem spining

12th. Mr Chumney looking for white sow this morning, cutting & malling & Halling wood to day cleaning of [f] Plant Beds to Burn, Halled up one Stack Oats yesterday I am going to meeting to day

13. went to meeting House to meeting

14th Hired Fannie & Johnson Fannie to Fannie W Fitzgerald for Valuals & clothes Johnson to Joseph M Moses on same terms all went from here yesterday evening This morning Hailing raining & freezing at night nearly still raining & freezing Bob & Henry making Brooms & claiborne Little Henry at work on Basket Smith picking Cotton Clem spining overseer made [ing] Blades & whitted saw - dolefull weather -

15 no better Rained all night & to day Our Dining room is nearly wet all over water standing fixed it to day shelled Corn & striped Tobacco in prize Barn, sent Jerry Smith|Smith]] to Mill,-

16th Rained nearly all night again, shelling & this morning still cloudy & like for Rain, cleared off
