1856 6 Oct Hanging Tobacco this morning Firing Tobacco Barn Back of Garden & Mount[ain] Spring Barn about this time we are weaning Our Mule Colt did not finish hanging Tobacco last night and very much injured in the lot, by stacking adams stayed with the hands till about Supper he left & did not come back to see any more about hanging & Tobacco injuring every hour fine morning & day —

7 We are hanging Tobacco in lot, firing 2 Barns, Adams Comes Out Soon enough of Morning but will not do any thing at night nor see about the hands at all Lowry gone to Mill after Bag of meal & carried 2 Bushels wheat for flour Halling tobacco to Mountain Barn, etc Hang leaves picking Out Cotton – This morning I told Mr adams I wished him halled in Tobacco first at Stoney & Come to Lot at house & then fresh ground & new ground last instead of [th?] he left lot for last he halls - & Just getting done

8th Halling Tobacco till 12 oclock firing Moun =tain Spring Barn & mountain pulling corn at Stoney pint & expect to hall it up this evening

9th Henry come home last night in 3 days to Lynchg bringing 14 Bags Guano 1 Bbl Bacon & F. wyatts Box & started again this morning to Lynchg again I am going Firing mountain Barn halling up Corn at stoney pint & then cutting down & stac[king] Corn to sew wheat. Hallling up shingles etc

12 We have been 2 trips to Lynchg this week & Carrd 75 or 80 Bushels wheat sold it for 7/6 & $1.30 Fired mountain Barn of Tobacco Cutting down & stack[ing] Corn to sew wheat.

12th Oct 1856 Halled up & shucked out corn at mountain fine clear weather

13th Sent waggon & cart, Twice to Dews saw mill to day 2 log for Joist for Porch 16- 2 Do 14 or 15. for Sheeting - Sent 2 Turns Corn for meal, clear day Toping succors for to Cut. gathering peas etc Snaps seed etc etc adams & Jacob gone to Harmony to Barbacue load for 2 Logs Cart carried etc brot back sheeting last,

14 Raining this morning we put our little Tobacco in Barn a little before day fired all the tobacco Barns & then shoemaking Making Brooms basket etc etc making Gate from 12 oclock till night we shelled some corn & Kitty spining etc etc – Very cool & windy Rained all day & still continues to night. Jacob making himself a pair of shoes himself, cold weather

15. Rained & snowed last night, quite cold Snow light, Raining a little this morning Shoemaking spining etc etc Halled up stack old oats & only 1 Load wood, I went to Riceville Rained a little & quite cold all day – =Give Sandy & Clem Blankets to day & Kitty Abram Lowry & Claiborne & Lila Blanket to day

16 Kitty & alse spining Sandy & Fed Shoemaking & mending Henry sick overseer went to new Barn & worked awhile & it commenced raining again & he went back to shop to work on Gate pt of 3 days this week, I went to see capt Gilbert, he is sick - rough week & very cool -

17th This day rained nearly all day shoemaking & mending spining & worked some in shop very Cold Rain disagreeable time, - - - - -

21st went to Court yesterday began to Sew wheat, cutting down corn, Wyatt at work on Barn Me Mr Adams my overseer has parted this morning I give him 2 mos wages & 2 Bushels corn & we are off as he don't suit suit me

1856 Monday 3rd Rained as hard as I ever I saw it but Once in my life stayed & Tuesday Election day it Rained in morning I arrived at strait stone by 12 Oclock acted as Commissioner & then got home by night in the rain found all well at home Thanks be to God

4th Election over at S.S. F. & A J D 22 Buchannon & B. 50 — Worked done in the above time

27th Faned out wheat Fed & Sandy fired Toba the rest commenced working on Ice pond pomd Henry Jordan & Lowry Plowing - Henry got out Guano & wheat say

28th Fed etc opening Drains, claiborne etc Picking out cotton —

29th Fed etc Grubing in new ground Henry & Plowing finished picking cotton

30 Lowry etc Plowing Jordan gone to Mill finished sewing other Johns Branch alse etc grubing claiborne etc cutting

31 Fed etc grubing Jacob etc cutting Henry etc Plowing — Wyatt & Sandy getting Shingles all the week Henry Sewing wheat sawing etc — this evening

Novr 1st Henry Jordan etc Plowing balance Corn, Halled Load corn shucked it out & put it Halled wheat etc —

2 Sunday Pleasant day

3. Shoemaking making Brooms etc etc

4 Striping Jacobs Tobacco - etc -

5 Cutting & Grubing in new grounds Shoemaking Mr wyatt getting shingles with Henry. Cleared of[f] very cold this morning ground very wet

1856 Novr 6th I went to Republican Grove, to See Mr Prindle, alse & Kitty grubbing Jerry went to Miss Sarah McCullocks Henry helping Mr. Wyatt Jacob & Balance pulling off corn by Bars

7th Moving & fixing Corn Jordan plowing Fed & Sandy Shoe Making, Halling up & shucking corn plowing up cotton Patch Henry & Mr. Wyatt finishing Tobacco Barn this evening - etc Picked out Cotton to day

8th Shucking & housing Corn Sewing wheat in Cotton Patch & by Lilas House etc Fed & Sandy Shoemaking Rainy a little Turned cool in evening etc etc

9th went to Fannies & she came here Jacob went to Riceville

10 Sent Henry to Mill 2½ B. W 4 Bus Corn & 1 Log for flooring for Porch Jordan & Lowry Plowing Fed & sandy Shoemaking Balance pulling off Corn fine day clear — fine weather

11th Sewing Wheat & getting up Corn

12th Sewing wheat & getting up Corn fine weather about this time

13th Sewing wheat putting up Greens & then for getting up Corn etc etc Finished sewing wheat sewed 32½ Bus. Henry gone to yates mill with Log for sheeti =ng 4 Bus Corn for meal 1 Bushel wheat F for fine weather = Halling corn this evening

14th Finished sewing wheat I went to Fannies sold Top to JD Hunt for $85 due now to be pd by or before X Halling up & shucking out corn fine weather. Henry Jointing shingles

1856 Decemr 1st this morning fair & fine weather my wife gone to Mrs Hunts stayed all night Jacob came home Sunday but Did not finish Fannies Corn gone back this morning Mr Wyatt Came to work this evening Henry & Sandy helping him get Sills & Plates for Porch to day Fed alse & Kitty grubbing Lowry claiborne & Henry little cutting abram & Jerry Smith piling Brush. Jordan Halling wood etc = 2nd Decr. This morning raining, striping Tobacco at mountain taking down Tobacco in new prize Barn this morning. Mr Wyatt came to Breakfast & left. Abram Crewss Corn comes to 70¢ he having 3 Pecks & a half Bus. in nubbins on the husk. —

3rd Sent Jerry & Jordan to Capt Gilberts machine 2 Bags Cotton 1 42½ 1 Do 50 lb Gross Fed alse & Kitty etc Halling leaves Mr Wyatt Henry & Sandy hewing etc

Decr 4th Jacob came home but prizing his own Tobacco & then he wants to go to Lynchg. Mr Wyatt Henry & Sandy hewed yesterday & at it this morning Fed alse & Kitty Grubing balance cutting Sent Jordan & Jerry to Faris cotton machine Cool fine weather wind does not this morningblow

5 Halled 2 Large Logs to Mr Yates for him for sawing Posts for Porch Henry Card 2 Bags Corn & 2½ Bushels Screan wheat for Chop Stuff - Jacob abram etc prizing Tobacco Fed & Lowry halling stacks Kitty & alse grubing claiborne & Sandy Cutting Jordan gone to Fannies to Raise Corn House
