Tuesday, May 11, 1920

A good day. Ben finished planting corn and fixed some land for water mellons seed. Jim draged his new ground. He had one of Marvins horses. Josie done a big washing and sewed this evening. I got dinner and churned this evening. I worked a few gourd plants and pulled dirt in the ice house hole. Went to Larries a few minutes then went to the plant bed for salit.

Cloudy but no rain to do any good. The men folks worked on their tobacco land. Josie done a big washing by twelve oclock. I got dinner. Henry kept Mabel. Josie sewed some this evening. Carrie and the children come a while this evening. Josie and I wrote a letter and the carrier did not take them up. 8 oclock Ben & Jim planted water mellon seed to day.

Rain this morning at two oclock and it is raining a gain to night. Good all day. John & Tenie and Chris tenia was here. Ben carried them home. Evylin went with them. They got back here at dark. Jim Thomson & family come to see us this evening. Marvin and family was here this evening. Josie and I got dinner. Johnson & Mollie come this morning. Mollie eat dinner with us. We had two water mellons this morning. Ben bought them. 9:15 oclock

A good day. Kate and I come home from Richmond to day. Willie come with us. We come home on the Virginian. Ben & Edna and Franklin met us at Long Island. Found all well as ususal. The boys is curing tobacco. They had plenty of water mellons. Nellie and Evylin are here. Josie & Nell had caned a lot of tomatoes. 9 oclock

A cloudy day. Jim staid at the barn. Ben brought a wheel barrow load of water mellons to the house. I got most of the dinner. Fried chicken and made coffee and bread. Josie baked a cake. Roy Smith was very sick this morning. They called in the Dr. He is better this evening. Josie & the children and I went up there this evening. Jim went to the barn tonight.

A cloudy day and rain this morning. The men rehung some tobacco this morning and cut some this evening. Josie was sick this morning. I got the most of the dinner. Josie ironed some this evening. I went to the water mellon patch and got one water mellon & Josie got two. I went to Marvins a few minutes this evening. Carrie was busy fixing for Sunday.

A good day rain tonight. Jim & Norman Booker walked around in the crop all the morning. Ben carried Ella Hubbard home. All the children went with him. Nellie and I got dinner. Louisa John & family come to see Josie this evening. The Boys got their first water mellons[sic] today. I peeled 4 pounds of pears today. Gathered some snaps for tomorrows dinner. Mrs Car come to the table to day. I am so glad she is better.

A good day. Jim & Henry worked in the tobacco. Ben went to [Renan?]. He was one of the judge[s] of the election. [Irvin? or John?] Harvey come for me & brought me home. The children went with me. I went to Kate Harveys & staid a little while. Jamie Gravely was there. Virginia & Jamie was fixing up their supper to take on a hay ride. They have a beautiful night for their ride. Nellie made some jellie & caned[sic] tomatoes this morning. Mrs Car strung the snaps & shelled butter beans & churned. I gathered tomatoes and corn. I cooked it all. We had two [water?] mellons.

A cloudy day and a little rain. We all staid at home all the morning. I got dinner. I cooked snaps & corn & chicken. Made apple dumplings and one damson pie. This evening Ben & the children and Mrs Car went to Mr Powers and to see Mrs Trent. She would not come with them home. I wanted her to come but dont think hard of her. I would not if I was in her position. Jim brought some fine water mellons to the house He cut two. They were very good. I made coffee & baked bread for supper. No one eat much.

A good day. Jim cut his first tobacco today. Evry body around was cutting today. I got dinner then started to Renan. Met Mrs Hutcherson[?] & Miss Ada. They going to Mr Edmons ask me to go and I went. I was glad to go. They cut some nice water mellons. Mrs Hutcherson & Ada Brough me to Renan. I was going to see KAte Harvey. She was gone to [Allaw..a?] so I come by Mollies. She had ice cream. Gave me a sauser full. She come with me nearly home and brought some ice for Josie.

A good day. Ben & Jim & Henry helped Norman Booker finish cutting tobacco today. Jim is fineing his tobacco to night. Queen Callans washed for us today. Josie has bin feeling bad all day. Mollie REwnols come today. Johnson brought her & come after her. I ironed some today. The children has gone to bed & sleep. I am about asleep. Jim has some fine water mellons. I have not felt well today. Hav not eat vegetables or fruit all day. Do hope I may be well by morning.

A good day. The men cut tobacco all day. They are hoisting some now & at night. No one come today. Josie suffered most of the day. I got snaps & butter beans for denner. I went and gathered peas and got some sweet potatoes this evening. I went to the water mellon patch for the first time since it was planted. Hatties children come for apples. Say they will dry some. They may.

A cloudy day. A little rain this evening. We need more so bad. It is very cold for May. We have had a fire all the evening. I got a letter from Nellie today telling a bout Evylins little baby. It was born the 20th of the month. It is named Elain. I was glad to hear from her. Hope she may do well. Ben has not come home yet. I know he is put out about having to stay. They have bin fixing land ready to plant all day today. Jim went to John Hutchersons plant bed and got tomatoe and pepper plants and planted them. Then he planted some water mellon seed. We had early supper tonight.

Monday. A good day. The men worked on the tobaces. Some. Jim plowed in the garden and the water mellon patch. Mrs Carter stoped here a little while. I was glad to see her. I always liked Alice. I thought Ben would go to the store this evening but he did not go. We begin to need rain a gain. Hope it will come soon.

A good day. Very warm. The men hauled logs to the saw mill all day. I staid at home today and done the work. I cooked snaps and corn and potatoes. Went to the corn field for snaps. Could not get them. Johnson Reynolds come this morning and fixed the pohn. Mollie come with him. I was glad that she come. It had been so long since she was here. Jim pulled a water mellon this evening. It was not ripe good. Ben gave the children some medicine tonight. I wrote two letters today. One to John. One to Carrie.

A good morning. Rain this evening. The men suckered tobacco half the day. Did not do any thing this evening. John Wards family went visiting this evening. I made Franklin a pair of pands and [waist?]. Finished them this evening. Jim pulled some water mellons to day. Well I dont know any thing.

A good day. Rain tonight. Nellie come home this morning. We were glad to see her. We all staid at home until after dinner. Floid Reynolds come for me to spend the evening with them. Howard Fergerson and family was there and Josie and family come. They had a nice dinner and ice cream. Mabel had all that she wanted. Josie brought us home. Nellie made coffee for supper and washed dishes tonight. Jim had some water mellons today. They were good ripe. Henry went with Floyd off some where this evening. Has not come home yet.

A good day. Very warm. Ben went to the mill. Franklin went with him. They got back by twelve. The rest of them suckered tobacco. One of the [Mary or many] [Candidy?] come to see them today. Nellie cleaned up their room. I got dinner and churned this evening. Three children and I went to Mr Bookers. None of them was at home. We come back. I picked some snaps. Got some vines for the cows. Edna helped me milk. They have had a good time to day. Have some water mellons to day.

A cloudy day. No rain. The men suckered tobacco all day. Norman Booker helped them a while. This evening Nellie and I got dinner. Nellie bathed the children. I killed two chickens and dressed them. I wanted to go to Marvins but could not get off. Hope it may be good enough that we can go in the morning. Floid Reynols and Stuart Owen come here tonight to see Henry. I reckon we have lots of water mellons now. I gathered a basket of tomatoes this evening. I think that the children are feeling better today.

A beautiful day. Jim and Henry and John Ward suckered tobacco. Ben has bin sick all day. He was taken sick in the night last night and has bin sick all day. He is some better now. Claud Fitz and family come here today. Norman Booker went to Gretna for the them. He brought Edna home from Marvin Smiths. Nellie went with him for them. They have a nice baby. We have a lot of water mellons now and see that every one enjoys then.
