Monday, July 29, 1918

A little rain today. Ben and Paul topped tobacco this morning. Paul suckered tobacco this evening.

Josie sewed some this morning. I got dinner. This evening Ben and Josie went to Strait Stone and Cedar Forest and Grit. Jane Reynolds come a little while this evening. She was horse back. I think she is a good little woman.

A good day and very warm. Ben and Paul suckered tobacco. Josie got dinner. I do[d]ged a round as usual.

This evening we went to Marvins. Kate Harvey come here and then to Marvins.

Marvin had water mellons the first I have seen this year. Josie come by the corn field and got snaps. I got a basket of tomatoes.

Heard this morning that Julia Fergerson has a daughter born the 4th.

Josie and I wrote to Thelma and Mary.

A clear day and very warm. Ben finished curing his primings to night.

Paul suckered tobacco. Mr Owen went to the mill did not get his grinding. Josie washed the breakfast dishes and ironed and got dinner and washed the dinner dishes and ironed most of the evening. I got breakfast and called them to eat then I milked three cows and watered hogs at three different places then I gathered some butter beans and helped to shell them. Then fixed the milk ready to churn then cut a bucket of cucumbers then churned fixed to wash some.

After dinner I washed a bout 40 garments then put the cucumbers in brine and salted the butter and fixed it ready for use. Then rested a while then milked eat supper and helped wash dishes and ready to go to bed.

A clear morning. Some rain this evening and I am glad. Ben and Paul and Henry suckered tobacco. Mr Baily come. He eat dinner here. Ben and Baily went to Finches this evening. Marvin and I and Reese went to Long Island to meet Thelma and Julia Brumfield.

Josie baked a cake this morning and got dinner.

To night Ben has gone to Strait Stone to the odd Fellows Lodge.

Monday, August 12, 1918

A good day. Clouds a bout this evening but no rain here. Paul suckered tobacco all day. Ben suckered four rows this morning and then went to Chatham. I went with him. We staid longer than Ben thought he would have to stay. We eat dinner at Mrs Woodings. She had a good plain dinner.

Mr John and Willie Baily and Mrs Hines come with Ben as far as their home.

Josie gathered some grapes this morning. We picked them off the stems to night.

Mollie sent over and got some grapes. Jane and Clifton come. I saw Alma and Lonnie at Chatham.

A good day. Ben and Paul suckered tobacco. Ben and Josie Thelma and Paul went to Strait Stone at twelve staid a few minutes.

Josie and Thelma washed some this morning.

I got the dinner and boiled grapes. Josie put up 14 quarts of grape juice.

We gathered and picked off some grapes this evening and to night Thelma and Paul both picked til we finished.

A beautiful day.

Ben and Paul suckered tobacco. Josie got dinner and canned some tomatoes. This evening she scrubbed the cook room floor.

I went to see Mollie Reynolds. She is not well but a bout.

I did not see Miss Kate or Mrs Jane they were taking their evening nap. Doris Brumfield and Christine Reynolds and Delma Owen come to Marvins a while this evening.

A good day. Ben and Owen fired tobacco all day. Paul suckered tobacco. Ben and Josie went to Strait Stone a few minutes this evening.

Josie got dinner. We had snaps and peas the first peas that we had this year.

George Blair come over here and got some water melons this evening. Paul and Ben will stay at the barns to night.

A good day. Ben fired tobacco all day and is at the barn now. Paul suckered his tobacco this morning. This evening he helped Mr Dews tie leaves.

Josie washed this morning. This evening she cut off apples. Marvin come this evening and got two pigs.

A good day. Ben & Jim suckered tobacco most of the day. Mr. Owen went to meeting. Josie commenced work on some curtains.

This evening Josie kept Carries children. They did well to be so small.

Mary Brumfield went to see her Aunt Mag this evening & come to Aunt Mollies. Reubin Reynolds brough her home.

There was speakin at Renan this evening.

A good day. Ben & Jim suckered tobacco this morning. This evening Ben went to Gretna to meet John & his children. They are all here to night. Mary Brumfield went to Lee Brumfield this morning. Walked all the way up there. Oscar & Hellen come with her back home. They would not come in and have supper with us. Josie staid at home & got dinner. I went to Johnson Reynolds to spend the day. I eat dinner there. Mollie had a good dinner. Reubin brough me home as soon as I heard that John was comeing. Marvin & Carrie went to meeting this morning. Carrie & the children was here this evening. Alma Bennett is at Lees to night. Jim brought home some cucumbers & tomatoes from the tobacco ground this evening.

A good day. Jim suckered tobacco all day. Ben carried Josie & Franklin & Mary B to Jim Powers. They spent the day. He brough them home to night. Fanny Power come with them. John & his children went to Marvins this evening and from there to Johnson Reynolds. Edna went with them. Christenia Reynols & Ruth Barker come here a while this evening.

Virginia Harvey & Hellen Brumfield come to night. Mr Smith brought them on a car.

I gathered a few beans this evening & killed two chickens for breakfast in the morning.

A good day. Ben & Jim suckered some tobacco. Ben went to Strait Stone and got some roofin. John & Edwin finished covering the barn and helpe work in the tobacco a while.

Ben carried Edwin & Christenia and Henry & Edna and I to White Falls. The river was two full & mudy. So we soon come home. I come by Johnsons. Mollie was makin grape jellie. Julia was washin some meal that she had bought. Kate Hubbard was taken sick today. I hope she will soon be well a gain. I come by Carries. She was pickin grapes.

A good morning. Rain this evening. Jim & Henry suckered tobacco all day.

Ben went to Chatham. John & Edwin and Christenia went and Kate Harvey. John gave them all dinner at the hotel. Kate & Ben was in the rain comeing home. Josie ironed some. We both got dinner. I caned five cans of tomatoes.

Edna and Franklin went to George Blairs. Josie got uneasy a bout them, a fraid they would be in a hard cloud but they got home before it rained.

I thought that Julia Fergerson would come but she did not. Don't know what is the matter.

A good morning. Rain tonight. Jim and Ben & Henry suckered tobacco all day except what time they worked over the sick horse. We hope he is some better tonight.

Josie and I have bin very busy all day. Josie made preserves & jellie of the damsons that she got from Powers. We made a pie of part of the peaches that she got yesterday and caned the rest of them.

Jack Harvey come over here a while to day. While he was here Miss Alice Wooding and Miss Annie Carter come a few minutes. We cut a fine water mellon while they were here. Julia Fergerson went back to Portsmouth. Julia did not come to see us while she was at home. Marvin and Carrie went to the baptizing this morning.

A good day. Rain at night. Ben & Jim & Henry suckered tobacco until twelve oclock then Ben went to Renan and got fruit jars and tops and rubbers.

Jim and Ben hauled a lot of olde boards to the wood pile.

Josie and I worked on grapes most of the day. This evening I picked a few dried beans and got some sweet potatoes, the first that we have had of this years crop. Josie gathered some snaps & strung them and got Irish potatoes for dinner, tomorrows dinner.

Prince is much better than he was yesterday.

Saturday August 13, 1921

A good day. Ben & Henry suckered tobacco this morning.

This evening Ben carried Henry & Edna and Franklin and I to White Falls. I brought home 21 fish. They were all small. We cooked them for supper. Josie staid at home with Mabel. She made Edna a gown. Edna is very glad of it.

No rain yet. We need it so bad.

I have not seen Carrie today. I miss her if I dont see her often. I guess I will get use to not seeing her.

A hot dry day. Ben fired on his tobacco all day. Jim and Henry suckered tobacco until dinner.

Josie staid at the barn while Ben carried Jim to Gretna. Ben brought Elsie East & Effie Brumfield home from Gretna. Oscar Brumfield carried his mother and Hugh and Aubra Brumfield and Ralph East to White Falls. We caught several fish. Jim Thomson was there with his car. He brought us part the way home and I was glad that he did.

A good day. The men folks suckered tobacco. Ben went to Mr Vaugns [?] to get a flue. Josie and I got dinner. Nellie and Evylin started home. Marvin carried them to Altavista. I went to Marvins this evening. She was washing. Kate Harvey and Hattie Gilbert was helping her. We ironed some this evening. 9 oclock

A rainy day most of the day. Ben & Henry suckered tobacco a while. Jim worked on his tobacco. Ben kept up fire/fine [?] in the barn. Josie got dinner. I made a few preserves of peaches that growed here. Pulled green[s] [?] Carrie come a few minutes for some soda. We owed her a pound. Josie is washing dishes now. The baby is a sleep. Kate come to Carries to day to see about some sowing. 8:30 oclock

A good morning. Rain this evening. Ben & Jim [&]Henry suckered tobacco. Josie and three children and went to Ricevill to the assosiation. Marvin & his family went. Reese drove Bens car. There was a big crowd there and a plenty to eat. Every one seem to have a good time. I met a lot of old friends. Jim & Ben & Henry eat cold dinner. 9 oclock

A cloudy bad day. The boys suckered tobacco most of the day. Nellie caned some tomatoes. Josie helped her some. Josie got dinner. This evening Nellie and Josie picked beans. I helped some. Ben yoked the spotted heifer. She kept getting in the corn. I went to Carries a few minutes this evening. Kate & Virginia was there. I am suffering with my leg tonight.

A good day. The men worked on the tobacco. This evening Ben carried Nellie & Evylin home. Josie & Mabel went with them. They got home a bout dark. Josie got dinner. I helped Nell pick beans. I went to Carries a few minutes. I gathered some musk mellons. I suckered a little tobacco to day.

A good day. The men folks suckered tobacco to day. Josie and I got dinner. Bettie Hayley washed here. Mr Mcraye come to day. I went to George Blairs this evening. Denia and the girls were busy mending. Kate and Charles Harvey come to Marvins and got a lot of matoes. Josie gathered a lot of tomatoes and picked up apples for the hogs. Jim has gone to the barn. Henry has gone with him.

A good day. Clouds about but did not rain here. Jim & Ben & Henry[?] suckered tobacco all day. Marvin & Rose Smith eat dinner with us. I was glad to have them. Mrs Booker came to see us this evening. Mrs Car churned and helped shell butter beans & scraped potatoes helped me get dinner what she could. I got cabbage & cymblings and butter beans cucumber & tomatoes & potatoes for dinner. Hattie [Gillient?] washed here today. Kate Harvey come this morning. She brought Henry two shirts & nice apples.

A good morning rain this eve & tonight. The boys suckered tobacco this morning. Ben [drawed?] the wheat out of the box. It was heating. He intended going to the mill if it had not rained. Ben & Henry went to the store tonight. Have got in at nine o'clock. Mrs Car churned and shelled butter beans and scraped potatoes. We get plenty tomatoes now. Ella Hubbard sent Josie a nice basket of tomatoes by Nat Wooding today. I got a letter from Effie Brumfield today was glad to get it am always glad to hear from them

A good day. The men suckered tobacco all day. Max Car went from here this evening. Denia Blair come to see Josie this evening. She brought some nice strawberries that Sallie Blair sent to Josie. Nat Wooding sent her 4 peaches very nice. Mollie Reynolds come to see Josie late this evening. I got dinner. Mrs Car helped me what she could.I starched the clothes. Intend to iron in the morning. Several of the people met at Straight Stone this evening and cleaned up the church.

A good day. Ben & Jim & Henry suckered tobacco all day. Josie has not felt as well as usual today. Edna & Franklin went to the Store this morning for medicine. They went to Reynols this evening to see about getting Edna dresses fit. There was no one at home but Reubin & Floid[?]. I am intending to go to Gallilee to morrow if nothing happens to hinder, Jim & Ben has gone to Norman Bookers barn tonight. I got some snaps from our cornfield the first [....?]

A cloudy day but no rain. Jim & Henry suckered tobacco. Ben carried me to Marvin's this morning. He come home. Marvin carried me to Galilee to the assosiation. After preaching Lizzie & Lonny[?] and Earl and wife Marvin and Carrie & the children and I went to the place we moved from. I was glad of the trip. Marvin sent me home. Russ[?] & Paul come home with me. Kate come to keep house from Mrs Car was getting dinner. Kate milked to [.......] we come by [Liz?] well I am a sleep.

A good day. Jim & Henry has suckered tobacco all day. Ben staid at the barn is up there tonight. Josie has not bin so [pent?] today. I got dinner and made some damson preserves. This evening I washed a little. Denia come to see Josie. She did not stay but a little while. Said that the girls wanted to go to Ede Hill to night. Irvin Harvey come a few minutes this morning. [a col?] woman[?]come here this morning. Years from now some one may wonder at some of the scratch. I am asleep.
