on 16th this was a hard faught battle our numbers
were greatly ovr matched, Gen Lee it is [?]
not have but 35000 men to put in this fight

a squar hand to hand fight and [?] til
4 oclock in the evening, the confederates had
8000 lying on the field kild and wounded
Yanks estimated their loss at 12000

crossed the river to Va once more and
the Yanks did not attempt to follow us
We took up camp at Winchester and remained
there until Nov then to Culpeper 6th and
then to Frerikcburg on the 16th Dec 1863 the yanks
attack us a gain and we licked then to
[?] the cold weather found us picketing a
long the west bank of the Rappanonock river
many of the boys coming in from [?]
and hospital , our ranks began to fill up
