Mary Ruth Slaton diary, 1938 - 1940

[Left] January 26 wed. It has been cold & the ground is covered in snow Today is Rex birthday. He is 43 years old. I made a cake & got dinner this morning & embroidered on my curtains this afternoon. Paul Miller came a little while this afternoon.

1939. Thu. Today is Rex birthday. I fried sausages this morning & ironed this afternoon.

1940. Fri. I haven't done anything much today Just the general house work & played chinese checkers with Rex. He isn't any better. I made Rex a one egg cake & dressed a chicken for his birthday.

[Right] January 27 Thu. 1938. Still cold & the ground covered in snow. I washed this morning & embroidered a little this afternoon & read some tonight. Uncle Brock still doesn't feel well.

1939. Fri. I mended some clothes & have done the general house work.

1940. Sat. Rex has felt awful bad today. Jay wen't to town with Dock. John told Jay that Mr. Slaton fell this afternoon & hurt himself real bad.

[Left] January 28 Fri. 1938. Still cold & the ground covered in snow. Rex & I have been married 5 years today. I ironed this morning & embroidered this afternoon. Uncle Brock isn't any better. I got a letter from Mother & Rex got a card from Ernest Baugh. He is in Fla.

1939. Sat. I cleaned up the house this morning wen't to Mrs. Rogers this afternoon. Peache come home with me. She meant to stay all night but her boy friend and MR. William came for her.

1940. Sun. I wen't to Mrs. Dortey's this afternoon. Malcum's baby died a little after 1 o'clock. I wen't down & set up until 12 o'clock tonight Alma was there also. We then came home & John & J.R. took our place. John says Mr. Slaton is seriously ill.

[Right] January 29 Sat. 1938. Uncle Brock isn't any better. Rex wen't to town but I didn't get to go as Uncle Brock wasn't well & I hated to leave him alone. I embroidered today. Read some tonight.

1939. Sun. It has been a rainy bad day but Rex & I spen't the day at Mr. Rogers even if it was rainy.

1940. Mon. Rex still feels awful bad. He started walking to Mr. Slaton's but John Marion overtaken him & took him the rest of the way. I wen't to Mrs. Dortey's this morning. I wen't to Mr. Slaton's also. He is awful sick. Rex will spend the night.

[Left] January 30 Sun. 1938. It rained awful hard today. Albert & Edna spen't the day with us. Uncle Brock is better.

1939. Mon. Mr. William Rogers & Earl Junior ate dinner with us. They helped Rex take down some tobacco. Earl Junior will stay all night.

1940. Tue. John came this morning & told us Mr. Slaton died this morning about 1 o'clock. Rex and John came after me & we wen't to Dock's this afternoon. Alma wen't with us. Alma, Rex & I wen't to town & I got a new hat & smock. Rex brought me home late this afternoon. He wen't back to Dock's tonight.

[Right] January 31 Mon. 1938. It snowed a little this morning. I have embroidered today. Marshall Flinn came this morning. I read tonight.

1939. Tue. Uncle Brock & I washed today.

1940. Wed. Rex came after me this morning & we wen't to Dock's. Wen't to Mr. Slaton's funeral & burial at Browders this afternoon. Rev. Hartford Preached the funeral. Came home tonight.

[Left] February 1 Tue. 1938. I wrote Mother, embroidered some & & have done the general house work.

1939. Wed. I have ironed most of the clothes today.

1940. Thu. We killed hogs today. Earl & John Marion helped Rex & Jay. We cut up the meat for lard tonight.

[Right] February 2 Wed. 1938. I have washed today. I embroidered a little also. Rex has been bailing hay at Mr. Slaton's so he hasn't been at home.

1939. Thu. I finished ironing today and have done the general house work. Rex wen't to the doctor today. He has an infected finger. Earl Junior will stay all night & milk for Rex.

1940. Fri. Rex rendered the lard today. He feels awful bad We wen't to Dock's late this afternoon & will spend the night. Silvia & Mary were there also.

[Left] February 3 Thu. 1938. I ironed this morning & embroidered this afternoon & read a little tonight.

1939. Fri. I had planned on going to see Mother & Dad today but the weather has been too bad.

1940. Sat. We spen't part of the morning with Sis & Dock. We wen't to town today & I wen't to Jessie's. We came home this afternoon.

[Right] February 4 Fri. 1938. I made a cake, washed my head, cleaned up the house & embroidered some and wrote Mother tonight.

1939. Sat. Earl Junior, Rex & I wen't to town today. We stopped at Leona's today & saw Cornell's new baby girl. It was borned last night.

1940. Sun. Listened to two sermons over the Radio this morning. John came a little while. Rex wen't to see William Slaton as he wanted to see Rex. Mr. & Mrs. Rogers, Peaches & Marie came this afternoon. Mason, Basil &William Ross came tonight.
