Sir, Having just been informed that Jas. Short late Supervisor at Round Valley ^is now in "Waiting" for the agency to be supplied under the late act of Congress. I am induced by the best of [making?] to remind you of his past history at that place, in connection with the [illegible], the Masacre [Massacre?] of the Ylackee Indians, his duplicity in causing the Concow & other Indians to run off & also in ledging complaints to me against the setter for destroying the crops that he neglected to fence & protect in con -sequence of all of which, I had your position written instructions to discharge him from the service - I done so, & in his stead, nominated & placed D. Wm. P. Melendy who had been the Surgeon & Phys for the Res. for 3 years discharging the duties of his position most faithfully, and who

has ever since his appointment as supervisor discharged the duties of both Supervisor & Physician for the salary of Supervisor alone & who would be willing to continue to serve in both capacities as Agent & Phys, for the salary alone allowed the agent, As you will [illegible] be informed by late Agent Steele, Dr. Melendy has as Supervisor raised more than double the quantity of produce on the reservation since his appointment than ^the total amount produced by his predecessor Short, Add to all this his [esternable?] wife as a [colaboree?] in the Indian Service has [proved?] of much importance - & there being no apointment [appointment] or provisions for a Physician it seems to me quite important to [retain?] Dr Wm. P. Melendy as Agt. & Phys. I have said this much wholy [wholly] unknown to the Dr. & wholy [wholly] unsolicited - that you may go in person & see the President who I know will do what he thinks to be his duty "Tho' the Heavens fall."
