Sir,
Having just been informed
that Jas. Short late Supervisor at Round
Valley ^is now in "Waiting" for the agency to be
supplied under the late act of Congress.
I am induced by the best of [making?] to
remind you of his past history at
that place, in connection with the
[illegible], the Masacre [Massacre?] of the Ylackee
Indians, his duplicity in causing the
Concow & other Indians to run off &
also in ledging complaints to me against
the setter for destroying the crops that
he neglected to fence & protect in con
-sequence of all of which, I had your
position written instructions to dis-
charge him from the service -
I done so, & in his stead, nominated
& placed D. Wm. P. Melendy who had
been the Surgeon & Phys for the Res.
