Brickworks in Bad Erlach, Lower Austria: An analysis of origin and professional background of workmen based on service books (late 19th to early 20th c.)
ARBEITSBÜCHER DES 19./20. JH. ******************************************************************************************************************************** Interested in the life of rural workmen more than 100 years ago? Do you have knowledge of Kurrent script and like to learn more about place names respective the geography of Austria? Then take a look at this collection and contribute to the transciptions. GENERAL REMARKS The archive of the municipality of Bad Erlach in Lower Austria contains a considerable number of service books of workers dating to the late 19th and early 20th century. These service books were in possession of mainly apprentices, unskilled workers or day labourers and record their professional career. Besides personal details we find information on employers, the work done by the owner of the book, dates referring to the length of employment and employers' references. SELECTION CRITERIA, LANGUAGE AND CHALLENGES Currently, the main focus is on service books containing references to brickworks (identifiable mainly by official stamps of employers in the books) as we are running at the same time a project dedicated to contemporary witnesses who worked in the local brick factories in the mid-20th century. The data to be obtained from the service books will complement findings of the project mentioned before and shed light on brickworks in the previous decades. The books are written in German Kurrent script which only a small part of the old population is still able to decipher. Moreover, employers' references are written by different individuals and primarily handwritten, resulting in various writing styles that need to be translated carefully. Seven books are presented on this page for transcription: Five of them belong to individuals who - at some point in their lives - worked in a brick factory in Bad Erlach (then: Erlach), while two books give testimony to brick factories in the vicinity of the village. SCOPE OF THE PILOT PROJECT The transcriptions of these books will aid to reconstuct the biographies of workers lives: Where were they born? When did they enter into work life? What is their education? What jobs did they do before enganging in brickworks in Erlach? etc.
