Wet rainy weather continues. The gardens look badly. Cold weather, and the great abundance of rain prevents their coming forward. It now appears the labour bestowed on them could be nearly lost. The most of the articles appear to be dying; notwithstanding they have been planted over more than once.

Washed Sheep; the most pleasant day we have had for some time.
21st
Washed Sheep, with a fine pleasant day. Great preparations are made to carry through Shearing jovially. A Government Brig lies in the harbor, her Crew are most oys, 30 or 40 to learn seamanship, and to fit them for the service of the Government.
A company of military men (about 60) from New Bedford dressed in their uniform. Besides the common and usual commotion at Shearing time.

This is the first Shearing day.
The great day of parade is now come.
The Soldiers dressed in their unifrom, with drums and musick; the Boys from the Brig, A large number of the temperance company, two Ingines [ENGINES] with the companies belonging to them, and all the boys called the Cold water Army, and all the best horses in town, say about 60. All marched to down to the Shear Pen in procession, through town and held a temperance meeting near the Shear pen and came up through Pleasant street, and on the whole there was the greatest stir that ever was known on a Shearing day. The weather very fine.

Very foggy this morning, the wind changed to NE at 11 o'clock which prevented the Sheep being Sheared. The rain set in with a Cold storm.

Cold rain storm yesterday & last night killed 100 Sheep that was Sheared the day before.

The Government Brig Capt. [CAPTAIN] Fredk. [FREDERICK] Moores left this morning.
The Soldiers & many others left this morning.

A public meeting was held at Friends main street Mg [MEETING] house. A lecture on Universal peace was delivered by Henry C Wright before a very large audience, & much to the satisfaction of the hearers. Lucretia Motta [MOTT] joined in a very good discourse on the same subject. The inconstincy [INCONSTANCY?] of War was very eloquently displayed.
